Opportunism is prevalent in many societies, if not all, yet, researchers have generally ignored (1) the efficacy of constraint mechanisms for different circumstances and (2) the impact of national differences. This study examines the relative effectiveness of different constraint mechanisms for IS consultants in China, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, based on different levels of information asymmetry, tacit, and explicit knowledge. While there is support in all countries for the salience of these dimensions, there are distinctions in the effectiveness of different constraints between the countries. Generally, consulting clients in the United States believe that social constraints are more effective, while those in China and Saudi Arabia favor legal constraints. The findings suggest that these distinctions are a result of differences in the legal systems and the religious foundations for social norm formation."

Online B2C retailers in China rely heavily on exclusive promotions for mobile shopping to attract new consumers and to promote their mobile shopping channels. However, it is unknown what factors may drive new consumers to continuously do mobile shopping without further promotional incentives. Motivated by the theoretical gap and practical salience of this question, in this study we propose a research model based on coping theory that highlights the critical role of active coping in handling mobile shopping procedures, and further identifies important dispositional traits of consumers and situation-specific factors that are either beneficial\n
or harmful to their coping efforts. We recruited participants for a real mobile shopping task and collected pre-task and post-task survey data to test the research hypotheses. The results reveal important factors that are influential to consumers’ continued use of mobile shopping through a coping mechanism, which contributes to deepening the understanding of user behavior in mobile shopping both from an academic perspective and in practice.

Based on the survey responses of 104 OSS-adopting organizations and 111 non-adopting organizations in China, a discriminant analysis of organizations’ OSS adoption behaviors was conducted. The current findings support the argument that OSS-adopting organizations can be clearly distinguished from their non-adopting counterparts in terms of their availability of internal OSS human capital, accessibility to external OSS human capital, organizational size, IT department size, and criticality of IT operation. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed."

Based on the theoretical underpinnings of typologies of business strategy, alignment between IT strategy and business strategy and upper echelon theory, this study proposes a research model. This study uses survey data from 81 CIOs/IT managers to test the model empirically. The results indicate that a match between business strategy and CIOs of certain repertoires of competencies, experiences and personalities could lead to better organizational performance. The business performance in “matched” organizations is significantly better than that in “mismatched” ones."

This study seeks to identify the motivational factors influencing individuals’ adoption intentions and the extent of a system adoption within the context of Open Source Software (OSS). Building on the theoretical underpinnings of the Self-Determination Theory, we proposed and empirically assessed two conceptual models to examine OSS adopters’ extent of adoption (based on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) and OSS non-adopters’ intentions for adoption (based on amotivation). Results from the survey collected from 264 OSS adopters and 212 OSS non-adopters reveal that strategy belief amotivation is the major factor for not using OSS (i.e., non-adopters) while identified regulation is the major extrinsic motivation affecting the extent of adoption (i.e., adopters). Interestingly, intrinsic motivation to accomplish and capacity beliefs amotivation do not significantly affect adoption extent and adoption intention respectively. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed."

They are (1) firm-specificity of OSS human capital, which denotes the extent to which the internal OSS human capital is strongly tied to the organization and cannot be equally well applied in other organizations, and (2) learning-related scale, which reflects the extent to which the organizational cost of learning OSS can be spread by applying the knowledge gained to other projects and business functions within the organization. Survey data collected from 114 senior Information Technology (IT) managers and professionals indicates that these two factors are positively associated with the investment in cultivating internal OSS human capital."

"fr" => "Game software trial versions, as the scaled-down versions of the software through imposing restrictions on functionality and/or usage of a grace period, are often given to users for free evaluation. Such a move is intended to encourage the eventual purchase of the full version software. Offering a trial version could psychologically influence an individual (i.e., arousing emotions as joy from playing the game), thereby heightening his or her willingness to pay (WTP) for the full version software, for which the individual’s fundamental nature of selfcontrol might avert him or her from doing so — the psychological paradox. Considering that a game software trial version is usually restricted through the permitted grace period (time restriction) or the extent of functionality available for use (functionality restriction), this research examines the psychological effects of these two forms of trial restrictions on users by anchoring on the opponent-process theory. Results from an online study involving 128 users reveal that imposing functionality restriction could lead to strong negative consequences on users’ cognitive absorption but heighten users’ self-control outcomes. Interestingly, imposing time restriction does not have an observable effect on these two variables. These findings provide insightful theoretical and practical implications."

"en" => "Anecdotal evidence indicates that on online discussion forum may not be utilized to its full potential in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of teaching due to a lower than expected student participation rate. This paper seeks to identify the motivational behavioural factors influencing students? intention to participate in an online discussion forums (ODF). Drawing on the literature on social psychology and applying the theory of reasoned action, we develop a conceptual model of intention to participate in an online discussion forum and empirically test the hypotheses in a cross-sectional quantitative survey. The findings indicate that expectancy on hedonic outcome and utilitarian outcome and peer pressure positively influence the participation intention of students. Also, the perceived importance of learning positively moderates the relationship between utilitarian outcome expectancy and participation intention. Theoretical implications of the findings are discussed."

"fr" => "Organizations considering green IT initiatives seek to reconcile two significant goals: environmental sustainability (“doing good”) and business profitability (“doing well”). These two purposes, however, are not necessarily aligned and can engender a dilemma in which investing to achieve environmental sustainability may threaten business profitability to some extent. Thus, this research builds on the theoretical perspective of corporate ecological responsiveness and proposes three types of strategic drivers for green IT initiatives (economic, authority, and moral drivers). How various types of organizations may be motivated by these green IT initiative drivers will affect whether organizations can reconcile the objectives of environmental sustainability and business profitability. We further deduce findings from multiple case studies of eight organizations in China and Singapore. The findings illustrate that the characteristics of any given organization influence why various driving factors affect their green IT initiative decisions. Additionally, “doing good” and “doing well” are reconciled when organizations consider the short-term investment and long-term benefit, design appropriate strategy, and receive severe external pressure. We also discuss contributions to research and practice."

However, the antecedents and consequences of such dual identification, and the relationships between them are poorly understood. We draw on social and organizational identity theory to seek answers to the preceding concerns by analyzing survey data from employees working in offshore IT call centers located in China. This study reveals that employees¿ dual identification with both the vendor and the client does not diminish but instead promotes service performance. Through understanding the issue of dual identification and national identity in a unique offshoring context, this study enriches the IS offshoring literature and has important managerial implications for both vendors and clients who wish to successfully exploit the benefits of IS offshoring."

"fr" => "Building on the theoretical underpinnings of Self-Determination Theory, this study seeks to identify the motivational factors influencing individuals' intention and extent of Open Source Software (OSS) adoption. Two conceptual models were proposed to examine OSS adopters' extent of adoption (based on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) and OSS non-adopters' intention of adoption (based on amotivation). The two models were empirically assessed using survey data collected from 264 OSS adopters and 212 OSS non-adopters. Results show that strategy belief amotivation is the major factor for non-adopters not to use OSS and identified regulation is the major extrinsic motivation affecting the extent of adoption by adopters. However, intrinsic motivation to accomplish and capacity beliefs amotivation do not significantly affect adoption extent and adoption intention respectively. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed."

"fr" => "The unprecedented proliferation of mobile technology has greatly enabled the B2C electronic commerce retailers to extend their businesses to the mobile platform. To attract potential consumers, most B2C retailers heavily rely on special promotions at the mobile platform at the current stage, which is proved to be very effective but it is unknown whether it can encourage consumers to use the mobile platform continuously. Motivated by the theoretical gap and practical salience of this question, we rely on the mobile commerce, coping theory and consumer psychology literature to propose a research model which highlights the critical role of active coping in dealing with the unfamiliar or different mobile shopping method and procedure and certain important consumer characteristics and cognitions that are beneficial or harmful to their active coping efforts. Eventually our research model depicts the factors that are influential to consumers' continuous use of mobile shopping platform and the inherent mechanism that is particularly associated with the current context. A longitudinal field experiment was conducted to test the research hypotheses. Results suggest that consumer's perceived active coping influences continuous use intention through higher level of satisfaction with task outcome and task process. Perceived active coping is influenced by maximizing tendency and expected fit of mobile technology. Implications and limitations are discussed to conclude this paper."

Based on the study of typologies of business strategy, alignment between IS and business strategy and upper echelon theory, a conceptual model is proposed. Survey data from 81 CIOs/IS managers is collected to empirically test the model. The results indicate that a match between business strategy and CIOs of certain repertoires of competencies, experiences and personalities could lead to better organizational performance. Specifically, the impact of IS on business performance in aligned organizations is significantly better than it is in misaligned ones."

"fr" => "As big data analytics (BDA) has increasingly influenced strategic decision-making, researchers and practitioners have continued debating on the roles of humans versus machines in making decisions. Our multiple-case analysis examines how BDA shapes decision makers’ adaptation of heuristics in response to different dimensions of environmental uncertainty (i.e., complexity versus dynamism). Contrary to prior literature that suggests BDA supplants human heuristics or impedes humans from adapting their heuristics, our findings underscore that BDA shapes the adaptation of heuristics through three distinct modes: alternative-reorienting, cue-patching, and relation-conditioning. Specifically, BDA shapes heuristics adaptation through the hybrid mode of cue-patching and relation-conditioning when environmental complexity is high, and through the alternative-reorienting mode when environmental dynamism is high. However, when environmental complexity and dynamism are both high, the uncertainty in environment may render BDA less effective, and substantial business acumen is required to adapt heuristics further. In addition, our findings reveal a pinning mechanism of BDA, that is, by keeping one component of human heuristics unchanged (e.g., original alternatives), a fixed point of comparison is created for evaluating the changes to other components of the heuristics. This study contributes to the literature by theorizing how BDA shapes heuristics adaptation and adds value to strategic decision-making in uncertain environments."
