Similar to Valve, the subject of the previous article in the series (Puranam and Håkonsson, J Organ Design 4: 2–4, 2015) GitHub is used to delegate the choice of projects and project allocation to its workers, fitting the recent trend in running organizations without bosses. The interesting fact about GitHub is that after years of praising its own unorthodox organizational structure, the company suddenly decided to abandon it for something much more traditional. We asked several renowned organization scientists to share their thoughts on this interesting case and discuss what we can learn from it."

We develop a computational model of individual-level learning in an organizational setting characterized by interdependence and ambiguity. The model leads to organizational outcomes with the canonical properties of routines: constancy, efficacy, and organizational memory. At the same time, the process generating these outcomes also produces heterogeneity in firms’ adaptive capacity to different types of technological change. An implication is that exploration policy in the formative period of routine development can influence a firm’s capacity to adapt to change in maturity. This points to a host of strategic trade-offs, not only between performance and adaptive capacity, but also between adaptive capacities to different forms of change. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2559226"

"fr" => "Organizations, as is true with social systems more generally, tend to be nearly, not fully, decomposable. However, analyses of nearly decomposable systems have tended to be at a single level of analysis and have generally neglected the vertical element of nearly decomposable systems. Critical to Simon’s notion of nearly decomposable systems is the property that the details of a particular sub-problem may be encapsulated and captured by more aggregate parameters and that those sub-problems interact in an aggregate way. We explore these issues in reference to the role of three canonical organizational structures in facilitating adaptation in the presence of near decomposability: a traditional hierarchy in which a subordinate reports to a single boss, an autonomous form in which the subordinate does not have a direct reporting relationship, and a multi- authority structure in which the subordinate reports to multiple bosses. Despite the ubiquity and potential benefits of multi-authority structures in coordinating highly interdependent tasks, our understanding of the mechanisms that determine the performance of those structures is still relatively modest. Scholars have noted conflicting empirical findings and have called for a more rigorous approach to study these organizational forms. To help address these issues, we develop an agent-based computational model that compares the performance of these three canonical types of organizational forms in settings characterized by different degrees of complexity and near decomposability."

Our understanding of capability origins, however, is limited because we often conceptualize the firm as a unitary actor. We develop a computational model of the genesis and development of coordinated action grounded in microfoundations. Our results show that a simple and plausible set of assumptions regarding individual behavior result in emergent coordinated action with three key characteristics: its properties are consistent with the idea of operational capabilities; it is endogenously adaptable to external change, shaping our understanding of the need for dynamic capabilities; and it offers an individually-grounded explanation for the origin of inter-firm heterogeneity. Our insights lead to propositions that can guide future work on strategy microfoundations."

The popular press, business books, and several articles published on the pages of this very journal have been describing, often in optimistic and upbeat tones, the new breed of organizations where traditional superior-subordinate relationships have been significantly modified or eschewed entirely. "fr" => "One of the key features of boss-less organizations is self-selection, where each employee is allowed to both initiate and join projects freely. While this approach has been gaining in popularity within many big and small organizations, we have a limited understanding of its properties, limitations, and key mechanisms. In this paper, we analyze the efficacy and boundary conditions of employee self-selection with respect to project selection and employee allocation. Our results suggest that the relative balance between an organization's human capital and the number of opportunities it faces plays a critical role in determining the advantages of self-selection, which performs better when human capital is scarce relative to opportunities. We also examine common policies that organizations use to further improve the efficacy of self-selection."

"fr" => "A central idea in the behavioral theory of the firm is that when an organization’s performance falls below aspirations, a search is triggered. While this aspiration-based model has dominated the empirical literature, it is only one of two Carnegie School accounts of how firms use performance feedback to regulate behavior. We call the second account the belief-based model. This model focuses on the characteristics of the choice alternatives faced by firms and the challenges inherent in evaluating them. Using a computational approach, we demonstrate that the predictions of the belief-based model may explain instances where search increases, rather than decreases, as performance improves. This behavioral pattern, both above and/or below the aspiration, is prevalent in empirical research but not well accounted for by the aspiration-based model alone. We then develop the Integrated Discovery and Evaluation of Alternatives (IDEA) model of problemistic search, which integrates the two models and identifies the organizational and environmental factors that induce one or the other constituent sub-models. We highlight the implications for empirical research on performance feedback and extensions to account for additional theoretical constructs such as affect and politics."

Which organizations stand to gain from this new trend, and how can they prepare for or mitigate negative consequences of remote work? Using a computational model, we show that complexity and turbulence in the organizational environment as well as the structure of organizational knowledge networks play a crucial role in determining the benefits of employees working remotely. Our results suggest that remote work is beneficial for organizations operating in simpler and less turbulent environments. These organizations also benefit from more disconnected knowledge networks, while those operating in complex and turbulent environments should consider switching to flatter and more interconnected networks when implementing remote work. We shed light on the likely effects of the rise in remote work among organizations and highlight the role organizational design can play in preparing organizations for this new reality."

We argue that a subsidiary is more likely to be co-parented when its need for intrafirm coordination, and thus the need for information processing, is high. Accordingly, the likelihood that a subsidiary will be co-parented increases with the number of other units in the firm and the relatedness of the focal subsidiary to them. Results of analyses, based on the population of subsidiaries of manufacturing firms operating in France between 1999 and 2004, support the predictions."

But while the literature on learning-by-hiring posits that new knowledge can be a powerful source of improvement and rejuvenation for a firm’s knowledge stock, evidence for whether firms actually benefit from hires with knowledge that is very distant from their own is mixed. With the help of a computational model, we explore how the knowledge distance of a new hire shapes the benefits of learning-by-hiring. The analysis of the model allows us to reconcile opposite findings and predictions found in the literature and provides further nuance to our understanding of this important phenomenon. Specifically, we show that knowledge complexity has a critical impact on the benefits of hiring an employee with distant knowledge. We also show that the level of refinement of the hiring firm’s knowledge shapes benefits from hiring, and we identify the mechanisms responsible for these outcomes."
