"fr" => "Complementing received research on the role of collaboration networks in fostering interorganizational learning and innovation, the authors focus on the importance of learning from other firms’ public knowledge. To this end they introduce the concept of spillover network — the network of “source” firms whose public knowledge a “recipient” firm is able to readily absorb and use as innovation input. Using patent-based data on a panel of semiconductor firms between 1976 and 2002, the authors demonstrate that firms’ innovative performance tends to be higher when their spillover network is either munificent or rich in structural holes. However, being exposed to a spillover network that is both munificent and rich in structural holes is generally counterproductive. Consistent with the insight that the value of external knowledge inputs depends on the firm-level resources with which it can be bundled, furthermore, the authors argue that the extent to which firms benefit from their spillover network hinges on specific intraorganizational factors—their scientific intensity and degree of downstream integration."

"fr" => "Extant organizational literature argues that straddling institutionalized categories begets an illegitimacy discount, leading organizations to reproduce established categorical boundaries. If gaining legitimacy requires compliance with this “categorical imperative,” why do we frequently observe categorical straddling even in uncontested and fully institutionalized categorical structures? To address this question, we propose that de novo (i.e., newly founded) and de alio (i.e., diversifying) organizations respond differently to the categorical imperative. Specifically, de novo organizations are more likely to enter and fit in high-contrast categories than in low-contrast ones, while the opposite is true for de alio entrants. To test these hypotheses, we follow technological entry dynamics within the semiconductor industry between 1976 and 2002. Using patent information, we examine how category contrast affects which technological categories de novo and de alio organizations enter, and the performance associated with those entry events. A comprehensive set of empirical analyses lend support to our hypotheses. Besides clarifying the link between the categorical imperative and structural reproduction, this study bears implications for entrepreneurship and strategy research on entry dynamics."

"en" => "This paper addresses the question “How does the fight against organized crime affect regional entrepreneurship?” We focus on asset confiscation in relation to alleged connections of their owners with organized crime, a highly debated policy measure against organized crime. Extending work on institutions and regional entrepreneurship, we propose that confiscation has contrasting effects on regional entries. On the one hand, confiscation of economic assets associated with criminal organizations’ legitimate activities in a region reduces competition and triggers renewal, fostering new entries. On the other hand, seizure of criminal organizations’ operational assets weakens their ability to exercise sovereignty, creating an institutional vacuum that lowers founding rates. Our results, based on a longitudinal study of Italian provinces between 2009 and 2013, provide support for both hypotheses. We also find that the negative effect associated with the confiscation of operational assets is mitigated when local governments have policies facilitating asset redeployment."

"fr" => "A firm’s innovativeness is driven by its ability to recombine existing technologies. Elaborating on this argument, we contend that there exist two distinct types of recombinant capabilities. First, firms may innovate through recombinant creation, i.e., by creating technological combinations new to the firm. Second, they may innovate through recombinant reuse, i.e., by reconfiguring combinations already known to the firm. We study what drives each type of capability by examining two factors: the degree of integration of a firm’s intraorganizational network and the diversity of its knowledge base. We test our theoretical predictions using data on 126 semiconductor firms between 1984 and 2003. Our analyses indicate that factors that favor recombinant creation generally hinder recombinant reuse and vice versa; however, combining an integrated collaboration network and a diverse knowledge base may concurrently enhance both recombinant capabilities."

"fr" => "The paper proposes a systemic theory of rivalry that addresses a key limitation of past research by articulating how rivalry spreads across levels of analysis and between social domains. Shifting the perspective from what rivalry does to what it prevents from doing, we conceptualize rivalry as a system of relational constraints that extends beyond the level of direct rivals. Using qualitative and quantitative data on the mobility of jockeys in the Palio di Siena (1743-2011), the famous horse race in Siena, Italy, we document relational gaps in the mobility network – career moves that do not occur, even if expected on economic grounds. The analysis shows that rivalry constrains not only the moves to rivals but also to allies of rivals and rivals of allies. The effect becomes stronger over time, attesting that relational constraints persist in developed markets. Our fieldwork reveals that the constraining ability of rivalry is based on conformity to expectations of loyalty and adherence to group identities. The observed relational gaps are pertinent not only to scholarship on rivalry but also to mobility and network research."

"en" => "Given its clandestine character, it is difficult to have precise, recent data on the economic significance of organized crime. The latest official data from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime are from 2009; at that point it was estimated that the cumulative total of criminal dealing represented more than 3% of global GDP. Ten years later, given the explosion of online betting in particular, and with other strands of cyber-criminality adding to more classical crime, it is highly likely that this percentage has increased. And, though it is clearly essential to combat this unlawful trade, we should also note that it occupies a place within the legal economy. While it receives little media attention, that place is nonetheless tangible. This is demonstrated here by Elisa Operti who has studied the role and impact of organized crime in the financing of classical economic activities and entrepreneurship. Her research, which she outlines here, actually indicates that organized crime may provide important support for traditional economic actors and certain regions, particularly in periods of crisis. This – perhaps unrecognized – aspect has to be taken into account by the actors combatting criminality, so that their fight can be adapted to the institutional and socio-political context in which it takes place."

"fr" => "The paper elaborates the concept of temporal multiplexity, defined as the overlaying of ties of different duration, such as transient employment and enduring organizational ties. This concept is instrumental in resolving long-standing challenges in network research, such as capturing the interplay between different levels of analysis or time horizons. This is made possible by longitudinal network and mobility data (1743–2010) from the Palio di Siena—the famous horse race in Siena, Italy. The outcome of interest is Palio-related collective violence. The analysis shows that relationally loaded organizational ties of rivalry or friendship increase the likelihood of incidents, whereas mobility along the same lines reduces it. The results support sociological arguments that symmetrical social space of friendship or rivalry is conducive to conflict. Mobility is a factor of moderation—by connecting employers within the actor and transferring relational content between them, it creates misalignment between the assumption of a role and fulfillment of its expectations. Mobility relaxes the relational constraints of jockeys, reducing their compliance with bellicose demands. The uncertainty resulting from mobility may have a collective benefit that is ignored by employers: the moderation of conflict."

Rivalry denotes a stable antagonistic relationship between companies, as exemplified by Apple and IBM in the 1980s. Analyzing data from the Palio di Siena (an ancient horse race in Siena, Italy), this article shows that direct moves between rivals are rare, accounting for less than 2% of all career moves in this context between 1743 and 2011. Rivalry constrains not only direct but also indirect moves to the ally of a rival or the rival of an ally. This article presents a framework describing how managers can harness rivalry: mapping rivalry, managing rivalry to capitalize on its positive aspects, and leveraging rivalry to adjust the level of competitive intensity."

We identify four types of network configurations characterized by different levels of internal brokerage and external boundary-spanning (fortresses, multi-level brokers, playing fields and absorbers). Using data on co-inventing networks within and between United States Metropolitan Statistical Areas between 2000 and 2014, we show that configurations balancing internal brokerage (closure) and low (high) external boundary-spanning lead to higher innovation performance than isomorphic configurations. In a nutshell, our findings convey a more nuanced, multi-level understanding of the trade-offs between different brokerage roles in regional innovation dynamics."

Integrating structural and cognitive perspectives, we propose that inventors with more cohesive collaboration networks within the firm or geographically closer to the corporate headquarters exert greater influence on the dominant representations shaping opportunity evaluation within the firm. Thus, their inventions are more likely to be positively assessed, even if quality considerations suggest otherwise. Conversely, even when superior in quality, inventions from individuals with less cohesive collaboration networks within the firm or located far from the corporate headquarters are less likely to be positively evaluated, leading to omission errors. The study provides evidence based on 22 interviews and archival data from the mobile phone and personal digital assistant industry between 1990 and 2010."

We posit that men and women may require different types of network ties to elaborate creative ideas successfully. We derive predictions concerning the extent to which men and women may benefit from family and professional ties in the idea elaboration phase. We also explore the mechanisms behind the expected gender differences. Based on a sample of French entrepreneurs, we show that women reap more benefits from family ties than men. In contrast, men have higher returns in creativity by elaborating ideas with professional ties. An experimental study indicates that women’s disadvantage in elaborating ideas with professional contacts stems from stereotype threat and lower expected support in the interactions with ties related to the professional domain, considered gender incongruent domain. We provide additional support from qualitative interviews conducted with entrepreneurs."

Our principal contribution is in articulating the role of rivalry – a personalized and relational form of competition – in influencing the cognitive activation and behavioural mobilization of social networks. Three experiments and two field studies provide consistent evidence for a negative impact of rivalry on women’s network activation and mobilization. We attribute this effect to the misalignment between the cognitive-relational schema associated with rivalry, promoting focus, agency, and confrontation, and gender-based cognitive and behavioural expectations, portraying women as more comprehensive, communal, and cooperative than men. The negative consequences of this misalignment are due to the experience of negative affect, fear of social evaluations, and perception of threat. A key takeaway from our analysis is that efforts at improving women’s network returns should better account for the role of contextual factors."

"fr" => "While it is well understood that being centrally connected within the intra-organizational network enhances individuals’ ability to generate impactful innovations, the firm-level implications of this argument have remained unexplored. Complementing the predominant individual-level focus of previous research, we examine how the distribution of network centrality among a firm’s inventors affects the innovative performance of the firm as a whole. We test our theoretical arguments using a multi-level panel dataset describing the evolving intra-organizational networks of 140 semiconductor firms, as well as the individual network position of each of their inventors, between 1986 and 2003. Our analyses confirm that central inventors in the intra-organizational network tend to be more innovative than less connected actors. Highlighting a tension between individual-level and firm-level outcomes, however, we show that such individual-level benefits rarely spill over to the firm as whole and in fact, they generally detract from it. In addition to changing our understanding of how intraorganizational networks impact innovative performance, the study bears important implications for both network theory and management practice."
