Abstract
This case study focuses on rethinking the destination and mountain experience in order to drive responsible innovation for La Compagnie du Mont-Blanc (CMB) as it transitions to a more responsible business model, under the French ‘société à mission’ label. CMB, a pioneer among ski lift companies in France, operates as a natural resort under a concession contract, facilitating transportation across the Mont-Blanc Massif of the French Alps through a network of ski lifts, gondolas, cable cars, and cog rails. CMB is a major employer in Chamonix. Consequently, it shoulders multiple responsibilities under its ‘société à mission’ mandate: to champion the protection of the Mont Blanc Massif, while also addressing the needs and interests of the local community and ensuring accessibility to travelers seeking mountain experiences. As a company, this entails publicly articulating its raison d’être and committing to one or more social and environmental objectives within the scope of its operations.
