Abstract
A French oversea territory, New-Caledonia went through a series of violent conflicts in the 1980s, opposing independentist and loyalist movements. In 1988, a mediation helped broker the Matignon Agreements, which were ten years later confirmed and consolidated with the Nouméa Agreement. The paper first presents the negotiation contexts of the two agreements, and analyses their outcome to date. The paper then introduces an interview with one of the key negotiators of the Nouméa Agreement, Alain Christnacht, who was at the time Advisor to the French Prime Minister.
