While it is clearly established that the contract is key to success in IT outsourcing, there has been little investigation into its negative side effects. In this paper, I examine the potentially detrimental influence of contractual mechanisms on IT outsourcing performance. Somewhat paradoxically, overemphasizing contractual mechanisms may be just as detrimental to IT outsourcing performance as underemphasizing them.
