Abstract
Collaborations between established companies and startups foster innovation in the former but face challenges, notably cognitive distance. A non-linear relationship between this distance and innovation outcomes is established. The study focuses on collaboration control mechanisms, essential tools for managing this distance. The hypothesis is that these controls mediate the non-linear relationship between cognitive distance and innovation capability. A survey of 239 French companies confirms an inverted U-shaped relationship, highlighting the importance of controls in exploiting this cognitive distance
