DSR in IS has not reached maturity yet. This is particularly true of artifact evaluation. This paper investigates the “what” and the “how” of IS artifact evaluation: what are the objects and criteria of evaluation, the methods for evaluating the criteria, and the relationships between the “what” and the “how” of evaluation? To answer these questions, we develop a taxonomy of evaluation methods for IS artifacts. We apply this taxonomy to the analysis of a sample of papers from the basket of journals of the AIS (Association for Information Systems)."

"en" => "Data warehouses are a major component of data-driven decision support systems (DSS). They rely on multidimensional models. The latter provide decision makers with a business-oriented view to data, thereby easing data navigation and analysis via On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) tools. They also determine how the data are stored in the data warehouse for subsequent use, not only by OLAP tools, but also by other decision support tools (e.g. reporting or data mining). Data warehouse design is a complex task, which requires a systematic method. Few such methods have been proposed to date. This paper presents a UML-based data warehouse design method that spans the three design phases (conceptual, logical and physical). Starting from user requirements, the conceptual phase leads to an object-oriented model represented using the UML notation. For this purpose, UML is enriched with concepts relevant to multidimensional modeling. The logical phase maps the enriched UML model into a multidimensional schema, independently of any implementation tool. The physical phase allows the designer to map the multidimensional schema into a physical database schema depending on the implementation target tool, typically a native multidimensional (MOLAP) or a relational (ROLAP) tool. Our method comprises a set of metamodels used at each phase (in particular a unified multidimensional metamodel used at the logical phase), as well as a set of transformations that can be semi-automated. Following our object orientation, we represent all the metamodels using UML, and illustrate the formal specification of the transformations based on OMG¿s Object Constraint Language (OCL). Throughout the paper, we illustrate the application of our method to a case study."

"en" => "This paper aims at supporting the knowledge engineering process by proposing an approach to map CommonKADS knowledge models into specifications based on the Production Rule Representation (PRR) language. This approach starts by proposing a metamodel of CommonKADS knowledge models. We define the concept of inference group, required to perform the mapping transformations, and an algorithm that identifies inference groups automatically. We then proceed to the definition of transformation rules. The latter are applied to map CommonKADS knowledge models into a set of PRR production rulesets, combined with UML activity diagrams."

"fr" => "The effectiveness of a Design Science Research (DSR) project is judged both by the fitness of the designed artifact as a solution in the application environment and by the level of new research contributions. An important and understudied challenge is how to translate DSR project research goals into discrete and measurable evaluation criteria for use in the DSR processes. This position paper proposes an inclusive approach for articulating DSR goals and then identifying project evaluation criteria for these goals. The goals are organized hierarchically as utilitarian goals, safety goals, interaction and communication goals, cognitive and aesthetic goals, innovation goals, and evolution goals. Goals in a DSR project are identified pragmatically by considering the components of the context coupled with the hierarchy of goals. Based on the identified goals, the associated evaluation criteria are determined and organized along the same hierarchy. These criteria measure the ability of the artifact to meet its goals in its context (immediate fitness). Moreover, our approach also supports the innovation and research contributions of the project. The apex of the goal hierarchy addresses the identification of criteria measuring the fitness for evolution of the designed artifact, to accommodate for changes in goals or context."
"en" => "The effectiveness of a Design Science Research (DSR) project is judged both by the fitness of the designed artifact as a solution in the application environment and by the level of new research contributions.

Our approach is based on the provenance (lineage) of data. We present the main concepts of our model for representing and storing data provenance, and an ontology of the sub-dimensions of data believability. We then use aggregation operators to compute believability across the sub-dimensions of data believability and the provenance of data."

"fr" => "As the design science research (DSR) paradigm has evolved, several frameworks and taxonomies have been proposed to aid researchers in understanding and applying DSR principles and practices to evaluate the knowledge produced. This paper attempts to integrate two such efforts, the evaluation methods taxonomy and the genres of inquiry framework, in an attempt to derive a more complete evaluation standard. The integration is based on various knowledge types, using mapping and merging techniques. Doing so results in three artifacts. The first is the integrated framework which refines the genres of inquiry framework with six recognized knowledge types (definitional, descriptive, prescriptive, explanatory, predictive, and explanatory and predictive). Evaluation criteria for each knowledge type emerge from the integration. The second contribution is a guidance scheme that helps in determining relevant evaluation criteria, based upon the type of DSR contribution and the role of the evaluator (DSR researcher, author, reader, or reviewer). Finally, the approach to the integration, including the integration algorithm, is adaptable to other contexts where criteria to evaluate different knowledge types need to be integrated."

"en" => "Data warehouses are mainly based on multidimensional modeling. Using OLAP tools, decision makers analyze data at different aggregation levels. Therefore, aggregation knowledge should be adequately represented in conceptual multidimensional models, and mapped in subsequent logical and physical models. However, current conceptual multidimensional models poorly represent aggregation knowledge. In order to account for the characteristics of this knowledge, we propose to represent it with objects (UML class diagrams) and rules in Production Rule Representation (PRR) language. We present our approach and illustrate it with an application scenario."

"en" => "Among the tools available to the designers of Decision Support Systems (DSS) and Executive Information Systems (EIS), there are generators, ad—hoc systems, groupware and end—user products based on fourth—generation languages. Most of these tools are characterized by a logical structure based on the use of multidimensional tables. These DSS and EIS softwares permit to define the structure of the database and to manipulate it in a user—friendly fashion with an exceptionally short response time. They are based on a specific logical data model, consisting of dimension, variable and relationship concepts. Based on the OLAP technology (One Line Analytical Processing), these tools allow to express multidimensional views using the client—server architecture. Starting from a real situation, the designers of DSS and EIS often have difficulty in defining directly the dimensions, variables and relationships. To solve this problem, we suggest to proceed in two steps. The first step consists in modelling at the conceptual level, using the extended entity—relationship approach. The second step aims at moving to the logical level, by means of transformation rules. To this end, we present an algorithm which transforms a conceptual schema into a logical schema based on the objects of the multidimensional model. We illustrate the use of the transformation rules by means of an example and present the tool associated with the method."

"en" => "Data warehouses are based on multidimensional modeling. Using On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) tools, decision makers navigate through and analyze multidimensional data. Typically, users need to analyze data at different aggregation levels (using roll-up and drill-down functions). Therefore, aggregation knowledge should be adequately represented in conceptual multidimensional models, and mapped in subsequent logical and physical models. However, current conceptual multidimensional models poorly represent aggregation knowledge, which (1) has a complex structure and dynamics and (2) is highly contextual. In order to account for the characteristics of this knowledge, we propose to represent it with objects (UML class diagrams) and rules in Production Rule Representation (PRR) language. Static aggregation knowledge is represented in the class diagrams, while rules represent the dynamics (i.e. how aggregation may be performed depending on context). We present the class diagrams, and a typology and examples of associated rules. We argue that this representation of aggregation knowledge allows an early modeling of user requirements in a data warehouse project."

This paper describes a method for data warehouse design. The method relies on the three modeling levels that have been defined for transactional systems design : conceptual, logical and physical. The conceptual phase creates an object-oriented schema which is represented using the UML notation. To this end, UML is enriched with concepts relevant to multidimensional systems. The logical phase consists in mapping the enriched UML schema into a multidimensional one. We propose a set of rules facilitating the design process. The rules are based on a multidimensional model unifying the main decisional concepts as provided by ROLAP tools. The physical phase allows the designer to map the multidimensional schema into a physical schema, depending on the target decisional tool. We illustrate our approach on a case study and compare it to the state-of-the-art."

This paper uses design science research to propose and apply a methodology that performs text mining on news crawled from the Internet to identify research directions for an emerging technology. The methodology uses relation extraction on the news documents to extract relations between terms of the emerging technology and information systems constructs and suggest research avenues. We apply the methodology to blockchain, a major emerging technology."

used by organizations to facilitate decision-making. However, they can be inefficient to cope with the growing need to execute complex queries. In addition, they experience difficulties in managing sparse matrices and are not efficient in managing schemas’ evolution. To deal with these problems, we propose to transform these multidimensional models into NoSQL graph models. Our approach ensures the automatic mapping of multidimensional schemas into property graph models. It consists of a set of mapping rules defined between two meta-models, namely multidimensional and property graph meta models. Finally, we illustrate the application of our approach to a case study and discuss its validation.

Despite its maturity, a granular understanding of how DSR develops knowledge, while utilizing and contributing prescriptive and descriptive knowledge, remains incomplete. Creating such a granular understanding requires a detailed typology of design knowledge, a unifying vocabulary of operations, and an identification of which operations can be applied to produce different knowledge types. We propose that “triplets of dynamic knowledge”, relating source and target knowledge types through operations, can be defined, and combined to develop design knowledge. We provide a vocabulary of operations on knowledge types and investigate the relationships between knowledge types and operations. We illustrate triplets that can improve fitness, projectability or confidence. The goals of the granular view of knowledge development are to guide researchers without constraining them, and to progress a finer-grained description and accumulation of knowledge development in DSR."

Although well-accepted as part of research in information systems, initiating or progressing a design science research project still requires effort to describe how knowledge creation emerges and its underlying dynamics. Given the existing body of knowledge on design science research, it should be possible to learn from that knowledge to progress future work. This paper analyzes design science research projects to identify and make explicit their knowledge contributions while recognizing the plurality of a project's knowledge contributions with respect to a project's knowledge scope and knowledge goals. The construct of a path of knowledge types is introduced that represents how knowledge contributions are dynamically created throughout a project. These paths form the basis for the derivation of seven design science research strategies, which lead to guidelines for initiating or progressing a project. This effort is compared to other research that analyzes the growing body of work in design science with respect to knowledge contributions and project classifications."

"fr" => "Emerging technologies are characterized by their uncertainty and potential impact. Decisions about these technologies are therefore crucial and difficult. The problem is particularly acute for complex emerging technologies, which combine several technologies. Guidance on emerging technologies is often lacking, even more for complex ones. In this research, methods and models to guide practitioners (members of the IT personnel) in the adoption of complex emerging technologies are defined. Guidance is provided by means of productions rules, requiring a controlled vocabulary organized as a taxonomy. The rules, and the vocabulary for the rules, are defined by researchers for a specific complex emerging technology (e.g., business intelligence and analytics in the cloud). They may then be applied by practitioners to decide on the adoption of the emerging technology in a specific organizational context. The approach is based on systematic literature review, thereby contributing to evidence-based practice. This paper focuses on the method to define the controlled vocabulary for the production rules. This taxonomy development method is built by combining systematic literature review with a method for taxonomy development, considering the specificities of rule-based guidance and complex emerging technologies. It is demonstrated on business intelligence and analytics in the cloud and evaluated in a government agency."

"fr" => "The field of conceptual modeling has been in existence for over five decades. To understand how the field has evolved and should continue to evolve, it is useful to examine the contributions made over time and the topics that have emerged. In this research, we apply bibliometric analysis to a corpus of 4652 research papers spanning from 1976 to 2022. Cocitation and citation networks are produced that show the different schools of thought, the main topics of the domain, and the relationships among major and influential research papers over time. The co-citation analysis identifies four schools of thought. It elicits the separation between the historical cluster centered around Chen’s seminal paper and another cluster proposing grammars and guidelines for representing the real world using conceptual modeling and methods for evaluating these representations. A bibliographic coupling analysis on papers from 2017 to 2022 results in ten clusters that characterize the main themes, including domainspecific conceptual modeling and applications, ontologies and applications, genomics, and datastores and multi-model data. The main path analysis of the citation network identifies several main paths among major and most influential papers. This leads to insights on the lineage of key papers in conceptual modeling research. The primordial nature of the main paths identified encompasses two important aspects. The first revolves around the refinement of the entity-relationship model. The second identifies the contribution of ontologies for conceptual modeling."

"fr" => "The field of conceptual modeling has now been in existence for over five decades. To understand how this field has evolved and should continue to evolve, it is useful to examine the contributions made over time and the themes that have emerged. In this research, we apply bibliometric analysis to a corpus of over 4700 research papers spanning from 1976 to 2023. We successively apply co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and main path analysis. Co-citation and citation networks are produced that surface the intellectual structure of the field, the main themes, and the relationships among major and influential research papers over time. We identify four areas in the intellectual structure of the field: conceptual modeling and databases; grammars and guidelines for conceptual modeling; requirements engineering and information systems design methodologies; and ontology constructs for conceptual modeling. Between 2017 and 2023, we distinguish nine research themes, including domain-specific conceptual modeling and applications, ontologies and applications, genomics, and datastores and multi-model data. The main path analysis identifies several trajectories among the major and most influential papers. This leads to insights into the lineage of key, influential papers in conceptual modeling research. The primordial nature of the main paths identified encompasses two important aspects. The first revolves around refining and complementing the entity-relationship model. The second identifies the contribution of ontologies for conceptual modeling to make the models more robust. Based on the findings from this bibliometric analysis, we propose several directions for future conceptual modeling research."
