Abstract
While information systems (IS) scholars have investigated green information technology (IT) and green IS, environmental sustainability is still underexplored. The IS community should actively address this topic by developing practical solutions to assess and mitigate negative environmental footprint. Design science research (DSR) can facilitate progress in this direction. In this research, we aim to help DSR researchers develop artifacts that contribute to environmental sustainability directly (green IT) or indirectly (green IS). To develop artifacts that contribute to environmental sustainability, DSR researchers need to understand what environmental sustainability consists in, as well as the factors that contribute to it. In other words, they need an ontology of environmental sustainability. Using the DSR methodology combined with systematic literature review, we develop this ontology which is currently missing from the literature. We mention applications of the ontology to diverse types of artifacts.
