In particular, we hypothesize that alliance exploitation experience has positive effects on R&D project performance, while alliance exploration experience has negative effects. We further posit that an internal exploration competence allows firms to leverage their external exploitation experience more fully. In contrast, when firms combine internal exploitation experience with external exploration experience, the negative effects on R&D project performance become more pronounced. To test this integrative model of organizational learning, we leverage a unique and detailed dataset of 412 R&D projects in biotechnology conducted by large pharmaceutical companies between 1980 and 2000. Using a competing risk event history model predicting successful product approval versus project termination, we find support for our theoretical model."

Through the construct of founder role identity, we delineate how identity centrality and complexity affect individuals’ ability to exit a work role in order to undertake founding activities. We then delineate how configurations of founder role identities influence persistence, and the longer-term outcomes of dormancy and successful founding."

An implicit assumption in the organizational learning literature, not yet tested empirically, is that the increasing breadth of knowledge and experience firms gain by expanding into new product markets (i.e. exploration experience) may enhance their capacity to innovate in the future. We address how firms may find it more challenging to learn from their exploration experience when they develop new technology instead of employing their existing technology to create new products. In our theory and analyses, we address endogeneity by accounting for the behavioral learning process that leads managers to explore new markets following periods of poor firm performance. We test our model using fine-grained data on new product development projects initiated by 52 biopharmaceutical firms between 1979 and 2000 and find empirical support. Our study identifies a theoretical boundary condition on the relationship between exploration experience in new product markets and subsequent performance in developing novel products."

We conduct an in-depth study of a global, diversified firm’s efforts to undertake new product development in home healthcare while simultaneously engaging in novel cross-sector partnerships. By explicitly comparing two different approaches to product development and the resulting partner interactions, we shed light on the factors that facilitate organizational learning and shared value creation. In particular, we contrast the firm’s use of linear and selection-based product development approaches for its implications for the extent of partner interaction, integration and learning. As the use of cross-sector partnerships grows, more fine-grained understanding of partnerships between for-profit and public and non-profit organizations is needed in order to better guide managers in their effective use."

"fr" => "In this paper, we question how some of the taken-for-granted assumptions from the interorganizational alliance literature apply for collaborations between hybrid partners – i.e., actors with distinctive institutional logics – and that inherently generate positive externalities. Specifically, we look at how the dynamic relational view (Dyer, Singh, & Hesterly, 2018) applies to cross-sector collaborations (CSCs) – i.e., associations between nonprofit, for-profit, and/or public organizations. We offer a framework that details how these hybrid associations’ intrinsic characteristics affect some assumptions of the dynamic model. First, we show that, besides the interdependence of the partners’ resources, both the actors’ different institutional logics and the collaborations’ emphasis on tackling social issues also influence the collaborations’ governance choices. Second, we propose that, for many CSCs, the interdependence and the nature of the partners’ assets will not be the critical factor in deciding the initial investments on either relation-specific assets or knowledge-sharing routines. Instead, the prevalence of an institutional logic will be more relevant to determine these investments. To conclude, we argue that the cross-sector collaborations’ intrinsic characteristics can also accelerate, delay, or compromise the future investments in these sources of competitive advantages and the development of informal governance mechanisms, both critical to creating relational rents. Altogether, we develop a model that provides a temporal explanation for how the nature of cross-sector collaborations affects the development of their drivers of competitive advantages and the generation of relational rents"

"en" => "The consumer goods company P&G has discovered a treatment for osteoporosis, a disease that leads to bone frailty, particularly among older women. Due to the risk and costs involved, the company plans to develop and commercialize the treatment with an alliance partner and create a new foundation for growth. This case focuses on the partner selection, deal negotiation, and partnership execution stage of its collaboration with Aventis (now Sanofi). The case also allows for a discussion of social network analysis as a tool to reveal the communication patterns within and across the two companies. Case discussion participants can reflect on the results and consider action items to prepare the alliance for the future."

"fr" => "This paper explores the benefits and limitations of collaborative relationships between employee ventures and their parent firms. Using multiple waves of a nationally representative survey of French startups, we track a matched group of 9,891 employee spin-outs over their first five years of operation. We show that, in their early years, the employee ventures founded with the parents’ support have better survival rates, higher revenue, and more employees than similar non-supported spin-outs. However, we find that the performance advantage of the former diminishes with time, a result consistent with the development of relational inertia. Specifically, we show that the effects of receiving parents’ support on the employee ventures’ revenue and employment growth provide no additional benefits from the spin-outs’ third and fifth years, respectively. We further uncover that, throughout their development, parent-supported spin-outs require fewer investments in tangible assets and incur lower debt than their non-supported counterparts. However, they engage in significantly fewer commercial activities such as prospecting clients, changing prices, and launching direct marketing campaigns."
