"fr" => "We review some 30 years of academic research on corporate philanthropy, taking stock of the current state of research about this rising practice and identifying gaps and puzzles that deserve further investigation. To do so, we examine a total of 162 academic papers in the fields of management, economics, sociology, and public policy, and analyze their content in a systematic fashion. We distinguish four main lines of inquiry within the literature: the essence of corporate philanthropy, its different drivers, the way it is organized, and its likely outcomes. After reviewing the main findings of the literature, we build on several research gaps to highlight directions for future research on corporate philanthropy with an interest in strengthening our understanding of this fascinating phenomenon at the crossroads of business and society."

"fr" => "Increasingly, frontiers between business and philanthropy seem to be blurred. Reward-Based Crowdfunding platforms contribute to this blurring of lines since they propose funders to support both for-profit and philanthropic projects. Our empirical paper explores the case of Ulule, the leading crowdfunding platform in Europe. Our results, based on a statistical analysis of more than 3000 projects, show that crowdfunding platforms foster specific kinds of relationships relying on reciprocal giving, beyond the usual opposition between altruistic and selfish motivations. We use the work of Marcel Mauss to account for this process of reciprocal giving, and we argue that Maussian theory of gift can be used more generally to describe funding activities in the context of early stage entrepreneurship."

Specifically, we study the rise of the “corporate philanthropy manager,” a position inspired by nonprofit values and goals which developed within large French corporations during the period 1979 to 2011. The process of creating, maintaining and legitimizing this new role – philanthropy as a new business function – is the central focus of our study, and we explore how elements of the nonprofit and for-profit worlds came together in this new role, as well as the role of various actors across multiple levels in influencing this combination."

"fr" => "The purpose of this paper is to understand the affirmation process of a collective identity in a community of nonprofit organizations. We focus here on music venues dealing with a context of music industry crisis and increased State pressure over the use of public subsidies. So as to gain legitimacy, these organizations - neither business nor government - have identified themselves as a “third force” in the field of popular music. Recently, a project of an innovative and collaborative information technology (IT) platform has emerged as a means to defend and foster this collective identity. The main contribution of this paper is to prove that conducting a business IT project has political and cultural implications, even in a field characterized by a low information systems (IS) subculture. However, in order to succeed, the process has to be led by mindful leaders who share an “organizing vision” and the discursive capacity to interest other community players to join in."

This article builds upon archival data and 38 interviews with key field actors in order to outline a brief contemporary history of corporate philanthropy, which facilitates our understanding of its development. This historical account is divided into three phases and analyzed along seven key dimensions. A table summarizes the findings, followed by a discussion on the prospects for corporate philanthropy in France."

Ikea (Sweden), Bosch and Bertelsmann (Germany), Rolex and Sandoz (Switzerland), Lego and Carlsberg (Denmark), and even Tata (India): Who knew that these companies belonged to foundations? There are more than 1,300 cases in Denmark – with 500 in Germany and 1,000 in Norway – of companies where the founders made the fateful decision to transmit all or part of their capital and voting rights to a foundation. Why?\n

This first European study aims to open a new path and objectively reveal how an innovative new economic model functions, one that makes no distinction between giving and investment, responsibility and altruism, capitalism and philanthropy.

Gallie introduced the notion of essentially contested concepts (ECCs) in 1956, social science scholars have increasingly used his framework to analyze key concepts drawing “endless disputes” from contestant users. Despite its merits, the ECC framework has been limited by a neglect of social, cultural, and political contexts, the invisibility of actors, and its ahistorical character. To understand how ECCs evolve and change over time, I use a conceptual history approach to study the concept of philanthropy, recently labeled as an ECC. Using France during classical modernity as a case study, I analyze key events and actors from the concept’s inception in 1712 as a virtue of the Enlightenment to its triumph after 1789 as a secular alternative to Catholic charity, until its decline at the end of the nineteenth century as a new consensus emerged around the concept of solidarity. By introducing the notion of historically contested concepts, I make several contributions to research on ECCs, conceptual contestation, and conceptual change."

In the first part, we synthesize knowledge on the history of philanthropy in France, its size and scope, government policy and regulation as well as elements of cultural context. In the second part of the paper, we present a quantitative analysis of recent giving survey data in France, highlighting several determinants on the likelihood to give and the amount donated. Trust towards others, religious beliefs, secondary education, old age and home ownership seem to be the strongest determinants for giving in France. This chapiter will be part of the forthcoming Palgrave Research Companion to Global Philanthropy, edited by Pamala Wiepking and Femida Handy."

"fr" => "Corporate philanthropy (CP) is a relatively recent area of academic inquiry. A few outliers notwithstanding, it is in the 1980s that research on CP emerged in management and social sciences and not until the late 1990s that it took off. However, discussions on CP already cover a variety of academic disciplines and theories. Yet the vast majority of CP research has remarkably focused on examining the “business case” for philanthropic endeavors, while very few scholars have studied the value of CP for beneficiaries and society more broadly. We observe a similar one-sided view in academic research on related topics such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social performance (CSP), where researchers have heavily focused on the positive financial outcomes of being socially responsible. The objective of this article is to propose a paradigm switch for a more accurate understanding of the CP. This paper strives to argue that a focus on the recipients’ welfare (instead of the corporate donors’ motivations) offers more promising research paths in this area and has the capacity to explain the specificity of CP within the CSR and CSP."

Specifically, we study the rise of the "corporate philanthropy manager," a position inspired by nonprofit values and goals which developed within large French corporations during the period 1979 to 2011. The process of creating, maintaining and legitimizing this new role – philanthropy as a new business function – is the central focus of our study, and we explore how elements of the nonprofit and for-profit worlds came together in this new role, as well as the role of various actors across multiple levels in influencing this combination."

"fr" => "This paper seeks to understand how contested practices emerge, get adopted and become institutionalized in an organizational field. Our study of the institutionalization of the practice of corporate philanthropy in France from the late 1970s to the present offers a number of insights into how actors at multiple levels interact to overcome the initial resistance to adoption of practices which profoundly challenge fundamentally-established organizational beliefs. We find that actors at the field-, organizational- and micro-levels mobilized three sets of “paradoxical tactics” which helped to convince both internal and external stakeholders resistant to CP of its merits, eventually leading to the institutionalization of a practice that was initially bound to fail."

"fr" => "Despite enthusiastic claims around the benefits of corporate volunteering (CV) for the workplace and its widespread implementation, the impact of such programs for beneficiaries and non-profit organizations remains uncertain, particularly when employees’ participation is one-off. Previous research suggests that the benefits of CV for employees, businesses, and society are more likely to occur if employees internalize a volunteer identity—that is, if being a volunteer becomes a part of their self. This leads them to sustain their participation in CV over time, maximizing CV’s positive effects on all stakeholders. This study explores the factors explaining why employees internalize a volunteer identity in a corporate context. We do so by empirically testing Grant’s (Acad Manag Rev 37(4):589-615, 2012) volunteer work design (VWD) theoretical model with a sample of 619 employees involved in CV programs, and by comparing its relevance with an alternative, extended model relying on insights from self-determination theory (SDT). Whereas we find only partial and weak empirical support for the VWD model, our SDT-extended model is supported empirically. These results show that the quality of motivation that employees experience while volunteering plays a more important role than repeated participation, as it illuminates the process of how factors such as the quality of the projects, organizational support for CV, as well as the causes targeted affect the internalization of a volunteer identity. In particular, we show that employees are more likely to internalize a volunteer identity if they can choose what cause to engage for and if they feel that the projects they participate in are meaningful. Surprisingly, we also show that a prestigious cause as well as recognition and managerial support foster a controlled form of motivation for employees, which are then unlikely to internalize a volunteer identity. In doing so, we contribute to a better understanding of how CV can have lasting benefits for both business and society, and provide business leaders with actionable insights about how to design impactful CV programs."

This chapter seeks to understand how new practices that challenge established\n
norms and values become institutionalized by studying the development of\n
corporate philanthropy in France over three decades (1979–2011). Our\n
inductive qualitative study uncovers the processes that enable actors at both\n
field- and organizational-levels to enhance a new practice’s internal and external legitimacy, ultimately leading to its institutionalization. In particular, we\n
identify the central role of a community of practice as a bridge between the\n
field-level, purposive interventions (theorizing, influencing policy) of an institutional entrepreneur and the organizational-level, emergent interventions (mobilizing, embedding) of frontline practitioners experimenting with the new\n
divergent practice, thereby enabling its legitimation and, ultimately, its institutionalization. As such, our findings contribute to refining our understanding\n
of institutionalization processes as inherently distributed and to uncovering\n
communities of practice as the missing link between “heroic” entrepreneurs’\n
interventions and the hidden work of frontline practitioners implementing the \n
new practice.

"fr" => "Corporate philanthropy (CP) is a growing area of academic inquiry in management and business ethics. To date, empirical and theoretical studies have primarily examined the “business case” for CP in two distinct ways: understanding the motives of corporate executives and measuring the outcomes for corporations in terms of stakeholder relations and financial performance. Despite important advances in these areas, we note that scholarly conversations on CP face a deadlock owing to the theoretical limitations in determining corporate donors’ genuine motivations and extrapolating a firm causal link between CP and corporate financial performance. This paper identifies the difficulties faced by extant research and proposes a way forward by shifting scholars’ attention to an important yet overlooked facet of CP: outcomes for beneficiaries and, ultimately, long-term impact, i.e., the lasting changes, whether positive or negative, intentional or not, that CP brings about for individuals, communities, organizations, society, and/or the environment. It identifies key areas and questions for which new theories and empirical studies could be developed, with the potential to reinvigorate CP research beyond a one-sided focus on corporate interests."

The shift generated a lot of headlines, but outside of the U.S. this form of ownership is not new. “Shareholder foundations” have quietly prospered for decades in continental Europe, particularly in Denmark where a quarter of the largest 100 firms are foundation-owned, including the three largest firms in the country: Carlsberg, Maersk, and Novo Nordisk. The authors’ analysis of these firms suggests they can succeed as businesses, and that the arrangement helps simplify some of the tradeoffs that for-profit companies typically face when considering social responsibility."

"fr" => "Hybrid practices combine core elements of different institutional logics. As such, they elicit contrasting responses from individuals, including ignoring, rejecting, and adopting them. Yet, extant research in institutional theory does not explain how individuals come to form these responses. To address this gap, we adopt a sensemaking perspective and conduct an inductive, comparative case study of 14 wealthy individuals based on life story interviews, examining their responses to impact investing, an emergent hybrid practice combining elements of the philanthropy and finance logics. Our study uncovers key contextual mechanisms by which institutions influence how individuals respond to hybrid practices, a neglected dimension in sensemaking studies. In particular, we show how individuals’ degree of adherence to the logics involved shapes how they notice, interpret, and finally respond to impact investing. Contrary to what previous research suggests, our study shows that individuals who are merely familiar with the logics at play are better positioned than both novices and individuals who identify with the logics to evaluate hybrid practices positively and adopt them."
