Many features imposed by the ERP template did not fit in the Chinese context. This present article describes what happened next. Rather than resist the system totally by not using it, the Chinese users worked around the misfits by inventing their own solutions known as workarounds. These enabled the ERP system as a whole to be workable in China but caused problems at company headquarters as some transparency was lost and the information provided was seen as potentially misleading. A project team was set up to examine each of these workarounds and decide whether they should be formalized or prevented. The result was a system accepted by users and management alike. Reflections on the case include a discussion on management attitude change, the positive and negative aspects of workarounds, the importance of good communications and the role of the researcher."

"fr" => "The relevance of action research as a research method in the information systems (IS) discipline is not disputed. Nevertheless, the extent to which action research is published in good journals is infrequent enough to indicate a serious problem. In this article, we explore the reasons underlying this situation and make recommendations aiming to increase both the practice and the publication of action research. "fr" => "We discuss the cyclical nature of action research (AR) in information systems (IS) and contrast it with other research approaches commonly used in IS. Often those who conduct AR investigations build on their professional expertise to provide a valuable service to a client organization while at the same time furthering knowledge in their academic fields. AR is usually conducted using an interpretive research approach, but many doctoral IS students, as well as junior and senior IS researchers, are likely to be expected to conduct research in a predominantly positivist fashion, even as they are determined to conduct an AR study that builds on their professional expertise. We argue that these IS researchers can successfully employ AR in their investigations as long as they are aware of the methodological obstacles that they may face, and have the means to overcome them. The following key obstacles are discussed: low statistical power, common-method bias, and multilevel influences. We also discuss two important advantages of employing AR in positivist IS investigations, from a positivist perspective: AR’s support for the identification of omitted variables and J-curve relationships. The study’s contribution is expected to enhance our knowledge of AR and foster its practice."

"fr" => "Dans cet article nous tentons de démontrer le potentiel des approches qualitatives en systèmes d’information. À travers un examen des deux derniers volumes complets (2011-12) des revues MISQ, EJIS et SIM nous dressons d’abord le constat qu’il existe une faible proportion d’articles utilisant des approches qualitatives dans la revue MISQ, un relatif équilibre entre approches qualitatives et quantitatives dans la revue EJIS, et une forte proportion d’articles construits sur des approches qualitatives dans la revue SIM. Nous illustrons ensuite le potentiel de telles démarches en analysant neuf articles en détail (trois de chaque revue), mais aussi à travers une revue plus générale de tous les articles qualitatifs publiés durant cette période (61 sur 217 des articles publiés). Cette analyse met en avant une variété de méthodes, mais aussi de théories et de contributions (tant pratiques que théoriques) utilisées. Cette analyse nous permet de démontrer que la profondeur, la rigueur et le détail de chaque article utilisant de telles approches sont autant d’éléments convaincants pour le lecteur. Enfin, nous proposons quelques suggestions afin d’augmenter la visibilité de la recherche qualitative en Systèmes d’information."
"en" => "In this paper we attempt to show the actual and potential contribution of qualitative research in information systems. We looked at two recent volumes (2011-12) of MISQ, EJIS and SIM and found that there were a low proportion of qualitative papers in MISQ, a balance of qualitative to quantitative papers in EJIS and a high proportion of qualitative papers in SIM. We illustrate the contributions of qualitative research in IS through discussing nine papers (three from each journal) in some detail and then the other qualitative papers in these issues (61 of 217 papers in total) in the discussion section. A variety of methods, theories and contributions to research and practice are discussed. The depth, rigor and detail of many qualitative research studies are impressive and make such work convincing to the reader. Some suggestions are made to increase the profile of qualitative research in information systems."

Elle met en cause, à travers les théories de la médiation sémiotique, de l'enquête et de la transaction dialogique, les approches dualistes, notamment les dualismes sujet / objet, situé / générique, micro / macro, représentation / réalité, pensée / action, individuel / collectif. Dans la perspective des penseurs pragmatistes, l'action et la pensée sur l’action constituent un seul et même processus continu de transformation du monde, continûment investi de sens par les acteurs à travers leurs échanges dialogiques : toute pensée est pensée d'une transformation du monde, et toute transformation active du monde s'inscrit dans un champ de significations."

Through the theories of semiotic mediation, inquiry and dialogic transaction, it questions dualist approaches, in particular the subject/object, situated/generic, micro/macro, representation/reality, thought/action, and individual/collective dualisms. In the pragmatist authors’ perspective, action and thought about action are one single transformative process. Actors continually make meaning of it through their dialogic exchanges: any thought is thought of world transformation, and any active transformation of the world is embedded in a field of meanings."

"fr" => "Based on a four‐year longitudinal case study of a French multinational corporation (MNC) this research explains how a global enterprise system, initially designed to provide greater control by headquarters across its MNC sites, led to the emergence of unexpected practices – known as workarounds – in its Chinese subsidiaries. Drawing on concepts from activity theory our findings provide greater theoretical understanding of workarounds in three ways. First, users are involved in collectively constructing and implementing workaround practices rather than simply being passive users or reduced to the dichotomous framing of ‘accepting’ or ‘rejecting’ an information system. Workarounds are not simple individual user improvizations but are collectively developed and become unofficial local rules. Second, workarounds are part of learning which goes beyond the view of workarounds as deviant and non‐compliant behavior. Third, learning activities are not restricted to users and their practices. Rather, as we demonstrate learning and evolution take place between the users, managers, processes and the system; that is, workarounds are not only a critical part of ‘getting work done’ but also an integral part of the institutionalization of an enterprise system."

We explore and review the role of activity theory in the study of crucial digital technologies such as social media, smartphones, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and algorithmic decision-making, considering the unique ways that activity theory accommodates such technologies and can generate novel insights. We identify several apparent limitations of activity theory with an eye toward promoting its development and ability to incorporate modern perspectives and conditions. An important contribution of this paper is to stimulate future research that brings together activity theorists to study, in greater depth, the impacts of digital technology, and to help generate ideas on how it should shape future human activity. The themes covered are pressing questions not only for activity theorists, but for the ways we live, work, and play. We suggest activity theory can play a larger role in discourse on digital technologies, and their impact and evolution over time."

We reviewed the AR literature and found 16 different methods, which constitutes a problematic situation for researchers. We describe and critique those methods before integrating their strengths to improve the AR method that is most frequently practiced in IS: Canonical Action Research (CAR). The existing set of principles and criteria for CAR is modified and elaborated to enhance the foundation for undertaking AR consistently. "fr" => "The close relationship between the concepts of information systems and information technology creates issues for researchers. Usefully distinguishing between the concepts is problematic. We investigate the use of the systems concept in practice, finding a pragmatic distinction between an information system (IS) and an information technology system (IT system). In a practice view, an IS incorporates an emphasis on both a technical and a social subsystem, while an IT system predominantly emphasizes the technical elements. This distinction becomes useful in practice because contemporary IS practitioners are often involved in acquiring and integrating IT systems into an organizational IS. This involvement leads to a viewpoint on the organizational IS (including the social subsystem) as a nexus of multiple IT systems. This nexus creates issues in practice for not only integrating IT systems into the organizational IS, but also integrating multiple IT systems with each other in the context of the organizational IS. These issues lead to research opportunities such as the need for new methodologies for IT system acquisitions and new theories that accommodate the social integration of IT systems and IS."

"fr" => "Most prior research on platform governance has focused on how large, central platform owners manage their ecosystems of third-party developers in a top-down fashion by setting, overseeing, and enforcing platform rules. Relative to the platform owner, each individual third-party appears small and insignificant. Even though third parties may be weak in isolation, this chapter develops the idea that they can create a counterweight to the platform owner by joining forces and forming a movement. We explore this idea in the context of Apple’s iOS ecosystem by investigating the attempts of various third parties to collectively protest and change Apple’s business practices. Using mainly secondary data, we illustrate how a movement of third -party developers emerged between summer 2016 and summer 2021. Overall, our findings show how various individuals and organizations that were initially disconnected and isolated became part of an emerging social movement, whose constituents became increasingly interconnected and organized. We show how this movement forced Apple into changing some of its App Store rules and influenced regulatory initiatives in the EU and the US. We conclude with a brief discussion of implications for the platform governance literature, regulators, and practitioners."

Such a sequential combination enable researchers to secure access to real-case settings for multiple publication opportunities, establish relationships and mutual trust for studying in-depth and longitudinal dynamics, and adopt a problem-solving approach to ensure the relevance of our research activities. We illustrate this combination through an empirical case of ERP implementation and use in China where the research team was first analyzing the organizational settings following a case study approach before switching to an action research stance for implementing change in the organization. We conclude by proposing a framework composed of the four research phases identified by Mingers (2001), viz.: appreciation, analysis, assessment, and action. For each phase we discuss the dominant approach that structures it, and how knowledge acquisition is guided."

"fr" => "Extraordinary events are exceptional and leave lasting memories in participants’ minds and sometimes in those of a broader audience. Digital technologies, and social media in particular, seem to be playing a growing role in the occurrence of such events. We analyze the physical interactions between actors and their digital exchanges via social media, which shaped the emergence of an event that developed around an unexpectedly successful, self-directed street art phenomenon. Interviews, onsite observations, and statistical analyses of social media traces reveal patterns in which the physical event and its digital counterpart recursively nurtured each other. These factors operated as a complex dissipative system in which independent actors interacted within and across physical and digital boundaries. Physical activities influenced digital activities, which in turn affected artistic creation and fueled the public’s eagerness to participate, transforming the event into a large art happening. Empirical observations reveal that the digitalization of the art show shaped the emergence of the event and stabilized it by placing it in a state of dynamic equilibrium. The event’s evolution, measured by social media activity, followed a Power Law, indicative of a phenomenon induced by multiple interdependent interactions. This signifies the existence of a statistically extreme, rare event."
