"fr" => "We adopt an interactionist logic to study the determinants of risk taking by chief executive officers (CEOs). We introduce the concept of “capability cues” – contextual signals that decision makers might reasonably interpret as indicators of their current level of overall ability – arguing that positive cues will induce boldness, while negative cues will induce timidity. Then, drawing from prior theory about how narcissists react to stimuli, we hypothesize that highly narcissistic CEOs will be relatively unresponsive to objective indicators of their performance; in contrast, highly narcissistic CEOs will be exceptionally emboldened by social praise (in the forms of media praise and media awards). We test our theory in two distinct studies, one of risky outlays by CEOs of publicly owned U.S. companies from 1992 to 2006, and a second of acquisition premiums paid by CEOs of a sample of U.S. acquiring firms, 2001-2008. Our analyses show that capability cues generally influence executive risk taking, but highly narcissistic CEOs are much less responsive to recent objective performance than their less narcissistic peers; in contrast, highly narcissistic CEOs are especially bolstered by social praise."

"fr" => "This is a study of the determinants of risk-taking by chief executive officers (CEOs). We adopt an interactionist logic, proposing that executive confidence – a key ingredient in assessing risks – is shaped by contextual stimuli but moderated by the executive’s disposition, particularly his or her degree of narcissism. We introduce the concept of “capability cues,” which are contextual signals that decision makers might reasonably interpret as indicators of their current level of overall ability, arguing that positive cues will induce boldness, while negative cues will induce timidity. Drawing from prior theory and research about how narcissists react to stimuli, we hypothesize that highly narcissistic CEOs will be relatively unresponsive to objective indicators of their performance; in contrast, highly narcissistic CEOs will be exceptionally emboldened by social praise (in the forms of media praise and media awards). We test our theory on a longitudinal sample of 152 CEOs in the computer hardware and software sectors, using multiple archival data sources. We find considerable support for our several hypotheses, thus opening a new theoretical avenue, and contributing new evidence, regarding the antecedents of risk-taking."

Since 1990, when Dutta took over the family business, Priya Entertainments has grown substantially from owning and operating a single-screen cinema in Kolkata to becoming a significant regional player in the film industry of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. In the last five years Dutta has opened five new cinema halls, including two multiplexes. However, the profits of several cinema halls are meagre considering the whole range of operations that keep them running. Except for a few halls, profit margins are not very high. Occupancy rates are too low to recover the high establishment costs in time. On the other hand, the domestic film industry grew by 23% in 2011–2012. The Bengali film industry has also been showing signs of a revival and steady growth. The number of movies produced tripled betwen 2006 and 2012. Arijit Dutta understands the urgent need to find innovative solutions to save his cinema exhibition business. Closing down a few halls is an option but he is reluctant to take such a drastic measure before trying to increase revenues, or reduce costs, or focus on the large untapped population in rural Bengal."

We argue that narcissistic CEOs address their need for acclaim by pursuing celebrity in the media and affiliating with high-status board members, and address their need to dominate others by employing lower-status, younger and less experienced TMT members who will be more deferential to and dependent on the narcissistic CEO. They manage each group differently through the use of different rewards, punishments and influence tactics. Our paper extends prior theory on CEO narcissism by exploring the mediating constructs that can link CEO narcissism and firm performance, offers a greater understanding of corporate governance by exploring how CEO personality traits influence governance structures, and demonstrates how a CEO's personality characteristics can affect the acquisition of social approval assets."

"fr" => "Weavers Studio, a private textile boutique based in Kolkata, was founded in 1993 by Darshan Shah. Weavers Studio has two main divisions: a for-profit part comprising Weavers Studio's flagship store, the export arm Veda Commercial, and the production unit Rangeen, and a nonprofit part comprising a textile study centre, a library, and a centre for the arts. The company produces, sells, and exports a wide range of hand-made textile products. Two decades after its founding, Weavers Studio is facing some problems. The company's positioning needs clarity - luxury, accessible luxury, or premium - as a response to competition. Some key people have left the organization recently and in the absence of a sustainable succession plan, the external threats will only loom larger. With the textile sector in India poised for double digit growth in the coming years, the stakes for Weavers Studio are high. How to develop a sustainable strategy for the for-profit segment that will allow the non-profit part of the business to continue?"

"fr" => "Grand challenges are system-wide problems. While top-down approaches to mitigating grand challenges may have potentially far-reaching impact, such initiatives from the higher scales can fail because of limited knowledge of ground realities. At the same time, resilient local efforts to address societal challenges can have limited reach. How can a grassroots organization work across locations and scales to address a grand challenge? We report the findings of a longitudinal case study of the Child In Need Institute (CINI), a non-profit organization that successfully scaled its impact to reach over seven million beneficiaries. Based on 40 years of archival data and four years of intensive fieldwork, our findings reveal “double weaving” as a recursive process of diagnosing and addressing problems by connecting actors and resources across locations and scales. The double-weaving process gives researchers a framework to explore the complex interplay between locations and scales that is necessary to address grand challenges. Our study contributes to research on grand challenges and scaling, advancing the spatial turn in organizational studies by developing the scalar dimension and expanding research that has primarily focused on locations."

The transition towards sustainability is now a major issue that has taken centre stage in public debate, policy circles, scientific forums, and business roundtables. Higher education institutions focusing on educating tomorrow’s managers and leaders and on business practices are doubly challenged by this development. On the one hand, they must be accountable to their internal stakeholders who strongly identify with the new “environmental awakening”. On the other hand, because of their status as research institutions, they must provide answers and propose solutions to face this challenge which is shaping up to be the most crucial issue that humanity has had to face in the modern era.\n
\n
In this book, faculty and researchers from École Supérieure de Sciences Économiques et Commerciales (ESSEC Business School), a recognized leader among European schools of business and management, provide a multi-faceted perspective on the different areas that need to be considered to understand the new market dynamics during this environmental and social transition. The book identifies the obstacles that come in the way of the transformation of dominant business models, and how to overcome them in order to move away from “business as usual”. The various chapters in this work offer a vast diversity of approaches that address the paradigm shift towards sustainability, providing insights for both business and higher education. The book includes chapters from seven different departments at ESSEC: Management; Accounting and Management Control; Economics; Information Systems; Decision Sciences and Statistics; Marketing; Operations Management; and Public and Private Policy.\n
Research-based and combining theory with practice, this thought-provoking book will be welcomed by academics, institutions, and professionals alike, wishing to gain perspectives on the challenges of the transition towards a sustainable society.
