"fr" => "In March 2013, when the income statements of his nine exhibition halls started coming in, Arijit Dutta, Managing Director of Priya Entertainments, felt that the time has come for a few hard decisions. Since 1990, when Dutta took over the family business, Priya Entertainments has grown substantially from owning and operating a single-screen cinema in Kolkata to becoming a significant regional player in the film industry of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. In the last five years Dutta has opened five new cinema halls, including two multiplexes. However, the profits of several cinema halls are meagre considering the whole range of operations that keep them running. Except for a few halls, profit margins are not very high. Occupancy rates are too low to recover the high establishment costs in time. On the other hand, the domestic film industry grew by 23% in 2011–2012. The Bengali film industry has also been showing signs of a revival and steady growth. The number of movies produced tripled betwen 2006 and 2012. Arijit Dutta understands the urgent need to find innovative solutions to save his cinema exhibition business. Closing down a few halls is an option but he is reluctant to take such a drastic measure before trying to increase revenues, or reduce costs, or focus on the large untapped population in rural Bengal."

"fr" => "This is a study of the determinants of risk-taking by chief executive officers (CEOs). We adopt an interactionist logic, proposing that executive confidence – a key ingredient in assessing risks – is shaped by contextual stimuli but moderated by the executive’s disposition, particularly his or her degree of narcissism. We introduce the concept of “capability cues,” which are contextual signals that decision makers might reasonably interpret as indicators of their current level of overall ability, arguing that positive cues will induce boldness, while negative cues will induce timidity. Drawing from prior theory and research about how narcissists react to stimuli, we hypothesize that highly narcissistic CEOs will be relatively unresponsive to objective indicators of their performance; in contrast, highly narcissistic CEOs will be exceptionally emboldened by social praise (in the forms of media praise and media awards). We test our theory on a longitudinal sample of 152 CEOs in the computer hardware and software sectors, using multiple archival data sources. We find considerable support for our several hypotheses, thus opening a new theoretical avenue, and contributing new evidence, regarding the antecedents of risk-taking."

Ten years later, his revenue is 6.5 million INR (about 100K USD) and EBITDA margin is more than 40%. Calcutta Walks offers walking tours within the various neighborhoods of Calcutta. Apart from walking tours, Iftekhar also offers city tours, river cruises on the Hooghly and offbeat tours away from the city. Iftekhar's unique social position has helped him develop his perspective, without which he would not be able to discover the diversity in his own city. He is active in the city's social circles and a lot of his customers are foreign tourists. Iftekhar loves Kolkata and strives to change the quality of tourism in the city by raising industry standards. At the same time, resilient local efforts to address societal challenges can have limited reach. How can a grassroots organization work across locations and scales to address a grand challenge? We report the findings of a longitudinal case study of the Child In Need Institute (CINI), a non-profit organization that successfully scaled its impact to reach over seven million beneficiaries. Based on 40 years of archival data and four years of intensive fieldwork, our findings reveal “double weaving” as a recursive process of diagnosing and addressing problems by connecting actors and resources across locations and scales. The double-weaving process gives researchers a framework to explore the complex interplay between locations and scales that is necessary to address grand challenges. Our study contributes to research on grand challenges and scaling, advancing the spatial turn in organizational studies by developing the scalar dimension and expanding research that has primarily focused on locations."
