Abstract
This study investigates the role of data governance in industrial platform ecosystems and its impact on sustainability goals. As industry 4.0 data-based technologies diffuse, companies confront the challenge of integrating heterogeneous data to work with different systems and stakeholders that must engage in coordinated action to reach the green transition in the energy sector. We conduct a single case study of Enel X, an energy services and solutions provider, mapping its platform architecture and data flow. Data integration and strategic sharing are essential to the company’s innovative data services. We found that data governance influences platform ecosystem evolution and is critical to providing innovative metrics for sustainability. This research contributes to IS literature by showing how heterogeneous data sources in industrial settings require novel ecosystem governance strategies to effectively coordinate resources across all the stakeholders and sectors involved in the green transition.
