Abstract
The scope of agricultural cooperatives has increased by 7% over the last 15 years in the French food industry. It was mainly achieved through acquisitions of investor-owned companies (IOC). In some cases, farmer suppliers of acquired investor-owned companies have become co-operative members. In other cases, they have remained non-cooperative suppliers. Why? The research aims at delivering the reasons motivating decisions taken by co-operative members and suppliers of IOC acquired according to the following aspects: identity, strategy, finance and governance.
