This paper reports the results of a research on CEOs’ dismissal in large French firms. We have collected data on one hundred cases and interviewed ten managers of “head-hunting” firms and twenty CEOs who experienced a forced departure. The conclusions of the research are presented in the form of answers to three major questions : Why are CEOs dismissed ? How are they dismissed ? And what becomes of deposed CEOs ?
