Abstract
The paper asks why so many people in France believe that “good management” must be imported from elsewhere. We identify multiple actors whose actions and opinions reinforce such a belief. Yet, there are many outstanding French firms – small and large – which are not managed according to standard American or Japanese management principles. We conclude advocating a research agenda driven by the observation of healthy French organizations in order to generate useful insights about management in France.
