Abstract
Among the main factors affecting the design cycle time, product and technology characteristics seem to play a major role. In line with the uncertainty reduction process paradigm in product development, the following hypotheses are drawn : (1) product complexity and newness tend to increase the design process duration, and (2) experience and familiarity with technology tend to reduce it. These hypotheses are verified in the context of a French programmable controller producer which experimented long development delays due to overspecified objectives in terms of product and technology characteristics.
