Abstract
All ancient philosophy can be defined as a spiritual exercise, understood as a set of disciplines aimed at transforming, in oneself or in others, the way of living and perceiving the world. This requires a theoretical dimension, a discourse, whether internal or external, and a practical implementation. While the aspect of mental work seems fundamental, the body is no less important. The point here is to highlight that from antiquity to the contemporary period, spiritual exercise is fully articulated with bodily attributes that can be of two kinds. On the one hand, a bodily practice accessible to everyone, such as walking. On the other hand, a bodily practice where the body is more intensely engaged, such as in extreme sports disciplines.
