Across a wide range of organizations, employment relationships are being rewritten. For emerging technology firms -with their high risks, high payoffs, dependence on knowledge, and need for flexibility- the human resources challenges are even greater. The authors explore characteristics of emerging technologies and changes in the workforce that are reshaping the relationships between employees and firms. Then they discuss an emerging new model for a “customized workplace”, in which workers and employers jointly determine the conditions of employment on a case-by-case basis instead of offering employees a one-size-fits-all work arrangement, or even a thinly disguised “menu” of options. These customized relationships can help companies find the talent they need to succeed by offering employees more control over their working life.
