Abstract
In this paper, I compare the diffusion of different institutional logics for physicians and health care administrators over a thirty year period. Results indicate where legitimating logics originate in a sector, the pattern of diffusion of ideas across target populations, and their institutionalization in a sector leading to organizational change. It also highlights changes in power relations between target populations in the sector. The analysis presents an ongoing legitimacy process within the health care sector which has serious consequences for physicians and the way they work.
