Abstract
In English as well as in French, general management, management control and human resource management commonly use the word performance, without precisely defining its meaning. This paper explores the various meanings of the word performance and establishes it as one of the numerous polysemous terms in the everyday as well as the scientific language. A further analysis of the metaphors associated with the word leads one to conclude that this lack of semantic precision has valuable social functions for everybody.
