Abstract
This paper proposes a new series of National Transfer Accounts for France covering the period 1979-2019 and leverages it to analyze the evolution of consumption and its sources of financing across ages, including age profiles of labour income, transfers and saving for each year. Three main results are documented. First, the age profile of consumption has shifted markedly since the late 2000s: while consumption growth decelerated across most age groups after the global financial crisis, it continued to increase for individuals aged 65 and over. Second, the origin of funds used for consumption has evolved across age groups, with younger individuals becoming increasingly dependent on public transfers, while the role of individual resources has increased at older ages. Third, the rise in seniors’ consumption does not reflect an improvement in their relative income position but is associated with a decline in their relative saving behaviour. These results point to substantial transformations in the generational structure of the French economy over four decades.
