"fr" => "Decision-making on behalf of others is common in domains such as finance, healthcare, and management, yet past research offers mixed evidence on whether individuals take more or less risk for others than for themselves. This paper investigates decision transparency, i.e., the extent to which the decision-maker is identifiable to the decision recipient, as a key factor influencing this self-other discrepancy. Across three experiments (N = 514), we compare choices made for oneself, for others under anonymity, and for others under transparency. Our findings show that individuals are more risk averse when deciding for themselves and when making transparent decisions for others than when deciding anonymously for others. These results suggest that transparency reduces the self–other gap by increasing perceived accountability, even without formal mechanisms. By isolating transparency from incentive alignment or institutional accountability, this research provides a novel perspective on surrogate risk-taking, with practical insights for improving delegated decisions."
