"fr" => "Top-down, donor-driven approaches have been a defining feature of elite philanthropy, from antique “evergetism” to Carnegie's Gospel of Wealth and even contemporary “venture philanthropists.” Intentionally or not, philanthropists often maintain a significant asymmetry of power with their grantees. Many foundations still prioritize control and measurement in their relationships and working methods, perpetuating this power asymmetry. For about ten years, a more horizontal, collaborative, and empathetic approach called “trust-based philanthropy” (TBP) has emerged. This movement calls for rebalancing the relationships between funders and grantees and proposes a paradigm shift in the way foundations work, as well as in their culture, organization, and leadership. While grantees need to comply with the requirements and norms stemming from the donor's will, advocates of TBP insist that their expertise and legitimacy must be recognized, too. However, other voices have criticized TBP as naive and counterproductive. The goal of this chapter is to define what TBP means, document its origins, review its key characteristics, and explain how it challenges conventional philanthropy. After reviewing key arguments from each side, we also discuss avenues for future research on TBP."
