"fr" => "Des collègues qui sont situés près de nous physiquement, peuvent tout de même nous sembler éloignés. Et des collègues qui sont situés à une grande distance physique peuvent nous sembler très proche. Nous explorons le phénomène paradoxal de se sentir proche de collègues dont la distance physique nous sépare. Nous proposons un model de 'perception de la proximité',un concept dyadique et asymétrique qui reflète la perception d'une personne par rapport à la proximité d'une autre. Ce modèle identifie les processus de communication et d'identification, ainsi que les facteurs individuels et socio organisationnels que influencent la perception de proximité. Le but est d'élargir la conceptualisation théorique de la proximité pour y inclure sa perception subjective. L'élargissement de la proximité objective à la proximité subjective devrait permettre d'éclairer de nombreux résultats contradictoires des études sur le travail à distance. De plus, l'identification des facteurs qui accroissent la perception de la proximité devrait fournir aux managers des manières d'atteindre certains avantages de la collocation même dans des situations où leurs employées ne travaillent pas au même endroit."
"en" => "One's colleagues can be situated in close physical proximity, yet seem quite distant. Conversely, one's colleagues can be quite far away in objective terms, yet seem quite close. In this paper, we explore this paradoxical phenomenon of feeling close to geographically distant colleagues and propose a model of perceived proximity (a dyadic and asymmetric construct which reflects one person's perception of how close or how far another person is). The model shows how communication and social identification processes, as well as certain individual and socio-organizational factors, affect feelings of proximity. The aim is to broaden organizational studies' theoretical understandings of proximity to include the subjective perception of it. By shifting the focus from objective to perceived proximity, we believe that scholars can resolve many conflicting findings regarding dispersed work. By understanding what leads to perceived proximity, we also believe that managers can achieve many of the benefits of collocation without actually having employees work in one place."

"fr" => "Based on a comparative field study of two software development projects, we use ethnographic methods of observation and interview to examine the question of how interdependent individuals develop and maintain mutual focus of attention on a shared task, which we define as the group engagement process. Drawing on Randall Collins' interaction ritual theory, we identify how mutual focus of attention develops through the presence of a task bubble that focuses attention by creating barriers to outsiders and through the effective use of task-related artifacts. Shared emotion both results from mutual focus of attention and reinforces it. Through our comparison between the two projects, we show that the group engagement process is enabled by factors at the individual (individual engagement), interaction (frequency and informality of interactions), and project (compelling direction of the overall group) levels. Our focus on group interaction episodes as the engine of the group engagement process illuminates what individuals do when they are performing the focal work of the group (i.e., solving problems related to the task at hand) and how they develop and sustain the mutual focus of attention that is required for making collective progress on the task itself. We also show the relationship between the group engagement process and effective problem solving."

"en" => "Distributed collaborations face significant dialogical challenges: sharing knowledge, questioning ideas, and developing new solutions. These challenges are often associated with such collaborations’ reliance on written communication such as emails and documents, which are not seen as conducive to the rich dialogues necessary for effective collaboration. However, numerous successful distributed collaborations exist despite their sometimes exclusive reliance on written communication. Based on a qualitative study of distributed collaboration in two contexts — an organization effectively coordinating work across two continents and a pair of scientists working together to develop a new theory — we examine how writing supports dialogue, and thus collaboration, among distant partners. Our analysis of the correspondences exchanged in these two historical distributed collaborations identifies four mechanisms of writing — objectifying, contextualizing, specifying, and reflecting — and shows how they support dialogue and so address the dialogical challenges involved in distributed collaboration. These findings are particularly relevant in our era of technology-mediated communication where even collaborations in collocated settings rely extensively on written communication. Our findings advance our understanding of fundamental aspects of distributed collaboration and propose to rethink the value of written communication in enacting dialogue and supporting collaboration at a distance."

"en" => "Using a mixed methods approach, we develop the concept of perceived proximity, which is created through communication, shared identity, and the symbolic aspects thereof. Building on previous theoretical work, we create and validate measures of perceived proximity. Then, we compare how perceived proximity and objective distance relate to relationship quality for collocated and geographically dispersed work colleagues. Our results show that perceived proximity (i.e., a cognitive and affective sense of relational closeness) and not physical proximity (i.e., geographic closeness measured in miles or kilometers) affects relationship quality in an international survey of more than 600 people and 1,300 dyadic work relationships. We also find that people’s perceptions of proximity mediate the effects of communication and identification on relationship quality. Using qualitative data (2,289 comments from 1,188 respondents coded into 9 themes), we explore the symbolic meaning of perceived proximity. We show how people can form strong bonds despite being separated by large distances and continue to shift the emphasis from information systems as “pipes” or channels to information systems as vehicles for conveying shared meaning and symbolic value. Our findings have important implications for scholars, managers, systems designers, and developers dealing with virtual teams, teleworkers, and other geographically dispersed contexts."

We find that rituals (i.e., visits, value affirmations, gift-giving, prayer, performing, storytelling) do so by means of their functions–bracketing worldview differences, modeling collaboration between farmers and agriculture development specialists, and packaging new knowledge in displays of compatibility. Our work also expands scholarship on the role of rituals in organizations and on management practices in Africa. Overall, our paper offers a complex, comprehensive view of knowledge transfer as involving both relational and informational work and relying on both symbolic action and tangible elements."

We show the strategies employed by women as they attempt to bridge these gaps; we also find that some of these strategies, while tackling one gap, may also deepen the other."

"fr" => "We develop the concept of perceived proximity, understood as a symbolic representation of one’s faraway coworkers. We build on Wilson et al. (2008), present new validated measures of perceived proximity, and compare how perceived proximity and objective distance relate to relationship outcomes between geographically dispersed work colleagues. Our results show strong support for a symbolic view of work relationships. Indeed, it is the symbolic meaning of proximity and not physical proximity itself that affects relationship outcomes. Also, the symbolic meaning of proximity is defined not by physical proximity, but by people’s sense of shared identity and by their use of (mostly synchronous) communication media. Furthermore, we find that how the sense of proximity is symbolically constructed mediates the effects of communication and identity on relationship outcomes."

Increased disenchantment with the models that have dominated relations between the North and the South since the end of colonialism – whether top-down or bottom-up (Stohr 1981) – has yielded the notion that a more productive way of developing the South is to help the people living there to acquire skills and know-how (Sen 1997; Karnani 2006). While there does seem to be agreement on this, the search is still on for the most effective social formations to help close the gap, as is the quest for the mechanisms most suitable for developing the South."

Indeed, having access to a large amount of data does not necessarily mean that we have access to “rich data” in the sense anthropologists talk about “thick descriptions” (Geertz 1973), that is, descriptions that specify many details, conceptual structures, and meanings and put them in context. In that sense, context is at the core of ethnography and qualitative research, broadly speaking. In order to produce thick descriptions of social practices, qualitative researchers rely heavily on an understanding of the settings and circumstances in which the practices take place (Geertz 1973; Van Maanen 2011)."

Through our focus on play episodes, we identify several distinct play practices: generalized initiation of play; amplifying play; diffusion of play; and engagement in demonstrative behavior. We show how these practices generate psychological safety via two mechanisms: vulnerability and comradeship. Psychological safety is both a result and a reinforcer of play practices. Once established, psychological safety fosters several work processes on which innovation rests, namely engendering new ideas, finding collaborators, intensifying effort, and addressing difficult conversations and conflict. By articulating the mechanisms and feedback loops connecting play practices with psychological safety, our inductive model advances the understanding of the conditions that enable innovation in contemporary organizations."

However, research has questioned this, finding that geographically distant co-workers can feel even closer to each other than colleagues in the same office, due to ‘perceived proximity.’ This research insight explores the various strategies project managers can implement to foster close and effective working relationships at a distance which are all the more relevant given the COVID-19 experience of a shift in working habits and the continuation of distance working post-pandemic."

"fr" => "Based on an ethnography of a high-tech firm, we show how deep play — the voluntary immersion in an enjoyable activity unrelated to work but symbolically connected to employees’ fundamental concerns — is integrated in the creative work process. Specifically, we show how episodes of work engagement alternate with episodes of deep play, how this dynamic sustains work engagement and results in creative problem solving; and how this dynamic held even during crises. We identify three mechanisms enabling the integration of deep play and work engagement: the similarities between these flow states, the visibility of both engaged work and deep play, and employees’ constant calculations about work. We also identify the contextual factors fostering both deep play (particularly the freedom to play) and work engagement (particularly work autonomy). Finally, we show how non-immersive diversionary play is integrated with mindless work – thereby offering a richer, more complete understanding of the role of various types of play in the creative process. Our work advances the understanding of micro-processes of creative work, enriches our understanding of flow, extends the theory of play, and deepens our understanding of the growing array of organizations embracing various forms of play."
