Abstract
This chapter outlines the wide range of perspectives and elements by which workforce diversity and workplace inclusion have been characterized and constructed. The author discusses the difficulties for scholars and practitioners to agree on a standardized and comprehensive working definition for the two concepts that can be applied unswervingly. The author provides a general overview of the historical development of the two concepts and related paradigms starting from the 1980s to more current conceptual developments and challenges. The overview highlights some of the key conceptual challenges and tensions that have influenced the progress and advancement of workforce diversity and workplace inclusion discourses across industries and sectors. The chapter concludes with an outline of conceptual propositions and alternative theoretical perspectives that are currently in development to reboot the general discourse of the two concepts. Future research directions also include propositions for scholars in the hospitality industry.
