Mainstream views on organizational creativity are based on dualist oppositions such as “creative-non creative” or “representation-reality”. A perspective on human action inspired by Charles Sanders Peirce, the founder of pragmatism and semiotics, offers a non-dualist alternative for the study of creativity. It views creativity as the deployment of meaning and action capacity through “semioses”, i.e. chains of interpreted signs leading to the development of individual and collective sensemaking practices. Then the paper analyzes the different functions and dimensions of the triadic signs concatenated in semiosis processes. It introduces the concept of “vagueness” and the key role it plays in the pragmatist perspective on action and creativity. Peirce’s theory of abduction, designated as “the logic of discovery”, is also “the logic of vagueness”, i.e. the active processing of vagueness, not to eliminate but to displace and transform it to make action possible. Thus, there is a close relationship between human action and creativity through vagueness and abduction. Under certain circumstances, triadic signs may collapse to signifier-signified dyads and creative practices to Pavlovian stimulusresponse modes of action. This “dyadic drift” of semiosis is illustrated by the example of management indicators. Finally, the opposition between vagueness and the claim to accurately controlling action is discussed as a political issue.
