Abstract
Leading people within a scaleup is different than leading people within both mature organizations and startups. Yet, we, as scholars, have done little to understand how leading within scaleups is different. Not only do we know little about what it takes to be a leader within a scaleup, but investigating how to lead and influence others within a scaleup may be integral in helping scaleups become successful. In this chapter, I utilize the agile work practices framework as a lens through which to review extant theories of leadership—namely, transformational leadership, paternalistic leadership, servant leadership, and identity leadership. Within this brief and exploratory chapter, I hope to foment the exploration of research on leading within scaleups from multiple perspectives and theoretical bases.
