Abstract
This paper describes an expert system design method, called UNIFESS, which integrates object-orientation, Petri nets and decision tables. Object-orientation allows a conceptual modeling of data and processes and/or facts and rules. Petri nets are seen as a source of knowledge representation in the conceptual design phase. Finally, decision tables are used to make knowledge acquisition and validation easier. The method has been applied to several real world cases and shown to be very efficient. An application to forecasting long-term interest rates is described.
