This paper explains French methods of institutional downsizing regulation and considers some of the controversies surrounding them -concerning their cost and their implications for company behaviour for example. It also tries to determine what "lessons" can be learned from such methods. The practices of certain French multinationals are considered and this brings into the picture important issues of the regulation and negotiation -through international works councils for example- of restructuring on a wider European and international level.
