The NATO summit will meet on July 8 and 9 1997 in Madrid. The admission of new members in the alliance will be decided. In Romania over 85 % of the population supports the idea of entering the NATO. The new government elected in Novembrer of 1996 has initiated a reform program in order to make its country's application acceptable. President Clinton's refusal to let Romania enter the first wave of admitted countries could endanger the reforms under way.
