Abstract
Within twenty years, strategy formation has evolved from a bureaucratic process to a more interactive approach. In this approach, the organizational actors’ autonomy, within a shared purpose, is stressed out. Corporate purpose statement is given as an illustration of the way firms build this sense of purpose without which autonomy could become counter-productive. The article describes this historical development.
