Abstract
Japanese firms are experiencing the deepest recession since the Second World War. The paper highlights the ongoing controversy in Japan between advocates of adaptation to the new realities of the global economy and those who insist on keeping the foundations of Japanese management. Observations of a sample of large Japanese firms show that managers are seeking a compromise between these conflicting theses. The accumulation of huge savings by large firms in the 70s and 80s enables managers to reconcile the two imperatives.
