Abstract
This paper deals with the recent trends of the multinationalization process of French industrial firms. It describes the evolution of French assets abroad and its impact on the balance of trade. The paper shows that the determinants of delocation are temporally invariant and that multinationalization is characterized by a specialization process, and market independent competitive behaviors. Finally, the institutional context of French firms is examined. For long-term competitiveness, multinationals need to have their governments as partners rather than as regulators.
