This article shows that life employment could be a legitimate aspiration until the energy crisis of 1973. Since then, the opening of the world market and the rapid development of new communication and information technologies constrain firms to adjust rapidly to a changing environment. In order to be flexible enough, firms must be able to manage their staff freely.
