Urban research has relatively neglected the middle-sized cities. The focus of the present paper is the dynamics of these kind of cities defined by their urban areas (INSEE definition). Their dynamics are measured on the basis of population and employment growth and by the equilibrium of their labor market. The analysis reveals four sets of cities, the dynamics of which are explained by location and socio-economic structures.
