The Smoot-Hawley act of 1930 by increasing significantly all import duties has contributed to the worsening of the Great Depression. After decades of lowering its tariffs the United States seem to be ready to rise them again, according to Barak Obama, one of the candidates to the Presidential elections of November 2008.
