Abstract
This text aims at formalizing the role played by fixed costs of labor in explaining the daily working time and the number of employed workers in a decentralized competitive system. It is shown that such costs account for overwork since the duration of the working day exceeds their Walrasian supply. The proposed analytical framework sheds its own light on the effects of mandatory reduction of working time on the demand for labor.
