Abstract
This paper results from a longitudinal research on the Paris Opera House. The Paris Opera’s successes and failures, both artistic and economic, throughout its long history can apparently be represented in a simple model which links the institution’s autonomy from public authorities and performances both in economic and artistic terms. The form of governance, i.e. the way power is shared within the institution between the State, the director and the staff, supplies a partial explanation. Further explanation lies in environmental factors: the intensity of operatic creation, and the Opera’s integration into the economic and technological environment.
