Abstract
Despite wide differences in the organisation and the financing of health care in different European countries, there is a consensus on cost-containment policies. For reasons of shortage in funding, economic appraisal is rapidly expanding in healthcare. Among the techniques used in order to choose a particular course of action, the most widespread are cost efficiency, cost-benefit, cost efficacy and cost utility studies.
