French politicians consider that three reasons account for Germany's superiority over France. These are the mark's stability, systematic balance of payment surpluses and the social consensus. It must be noted that only the first of these reasons confers a real superiority to the German economy. However, over the past quarter of a century, growth rates have been practically identical in France and in Germany. Finally, the social consensus is today the main cause of Germany's stagnation.
