Abstract
This paper analyses why, and how, negotiation training proves accurate for diplomats. Three reasons explain why: because negotiation and diplomacy share common historical origins, because modern diplomacy has entered into “the age of negotiation”(Zartman), and because there is a corpus of results gathered by negotiation research, and of best practices. How, then, should negotiation trainings be organised? The paper shows that this is an old challenge, going back to Torcy’s Académie politique. Nowadays, the experience of the French ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institut diplomatique is analysed, compared to the negotiation trainings within the European Commission.
