This article contains an economic analysis of the EU decisions regarding state aid. The consistency between state aid policy and competition policy (i.e. enforcement of articles 85 and 86) is examined. The author finds that decisions with regard to state aid are only loosely related to microeconomic analysis. Political and social considerations intervene in the decision mechanism.
