Pour être audité, le système d'information est décomposé en domaines (sécurité informatique, applications, stratégie informatique, etc.). Chaque domaine est décomposé en sous-domaines, et ainsi de suite. Chaque domaine est évalué selon un ou plusieurs critères (efficacité, sécurité, performance, etc.). Cette évaluation permet à l'auditeur d'émettre une opinion sur le système d'information. Une application à l'audit d'un système d'information comptable et financier est décrite."
