Abstract
US President Wilson entered into World War 1 on the basis of his famous “14 Points”, the first one being: “Open covenants of peace, openly arrived at”, thus promising to end the secret negotiations which constituted the undisputed paradigm of diplomacy. This chapter analyzes how Wilson took this commitment, and why he was unable to stick to it a few months later at the Versailles conference.
