"fr" => "The European seed business of Syngenta relies on its supply chain to supply seed products to the different European markets, which led to more than 1.2 billion USD revenues in 2013. The seed supply chain is, however, exposed to a high level of uncertainty – from the demand side as well as from the supply side. Determining optimal production volumes in a highly volatile environment and more than one year before the sales period is not only a complex business decision but also one which strongly affects the company's profitability through lost sales and unsold supply. In order to better handle the production volume planning, Syngenta has developed a planning tool which determines optimal production volumes by taking the different levels of uncertainty into account. We report on this tool, the impact it has achieved, its integration into the planning process at Syngenta, and its technical design. In 2013, its first year of application, the production optimization tool has already avoided approximately 1.5 million USD in supply discards and has led Syngenta to revise the way it handles uncertainty in its supply chain planning."

Supplier selections are complex but nonetheless strategically important decisions that are influenced by numerous factors. Drawing on the resource-based and relational view of the firm, we investigate how\n
suppliers’ economies of scale influence the buyer’s selection decision, and we illustrate how the influence of scale is contingent upon important economic, buyer, and relationship characteristics. We test the model with a large secondary dataset of actual supplier selection decisions from the automotive industry and show that economies of scale have a strongly positive but diminishing effect on the buying firm’s supplier selection decision. These effects are reinforced or extenuated by economic, buyer, and relationship characteristics, with characteristics that are more specific to the buyer-supplier situation (e.g., relationship duration and power balance) having a stronger moderating effect than do characteristics that are more global (e.g., economic cycle). Our research helps suppliers to better understand how to manage selection probabilities with buyers and provides buying firms with a better understanding of how contextual factors affect the benefit of supplier-provided economies of scale.

Electricity costs are difficult to manage because unit costs increase with the total load, i.e., the amount of electricity needed by the manufacturing line at a certain point in time. We demonstrate that standard methods for controlling manufacturing lines cannot be used and that standard analytic results for stochastic manufacturing lines do not hold in the presence of electricity costs. We develop a control policy that balances electricity costs with inventory holding and backorder costs. We derive closed-form expressions and analytic properties of the expected total cost for manufacturing lines with two workstations and demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the policy for manufacturing lines with more than two workstations. The results indicate that avoiding electricity peak loads requires additional investment in manufacturing capacity and higher inventory and backorder costs. Our approach also applies to companies which aim at reducing their carbon emissions in addition to their operating costs."

Every year, humanitarian organizations assign a sizable portion of their limited financial resources to procure, operate and maintain operating assets, without which service delivery would be nearly impossible.\n
In this paper, using vehicles to represent operating assets, we identify policies for sizing and allocating operational capacity to minimize the expected deprivation costs in a humanitarian development context.\n
First, we develop a stochastic dynamic programming model, and then an efficient heuristic policy that considers the interaction of asset purchasing and operating decisions when the budget is uncertain. Based\n
on a data set provided by a large international organization, we estimate the parameters of our model to run numerical experiments. Results demonstrate the following: (i) Although budget uncertainty increases the expected deprivation costs and decreases capacity utilization, the negative impact of budget uncertainty is mitigated if budget savings between periods is allowed; (ii) a policy for minimizing the expected deprivation costs over time may avoid using all available assets in all periods; (iii) in situations in which the variations in the criticality of missions are large, both the expected deprivation costs and fleet utilization decrease; and (iv) in most situations, a centralized asset procurement model outperforms a decentralized model, not\n
only in terms of logistic costs but also in minimizing the expected deprivation costs.

"fr" => "Sales and operations planning processes are used to align production quantities and customer demand. Two key activities of these processes are demand planning and production planning, which are often assigned to individuals in different departments. Production planning requires accurate demand forecasts from demand planning to be able to choose proper production quantities, but demand planners have to invest effort to create accurate demand forecasts. We study the role of social preferences (altruism, inequality aversion, and competitive pressure) in incentivizing demand planners to invest effort, and we analyze how social preferences interact with monetary incentives. We use a game-theoretic model and laboratory experiments. Our results indicate that social preferences can be used to incentivize demand planners to invest effort and that this effect is anticipated by production planners. The resulting more accurate demand forecasts and adapted production quantities result in higher company profit. We also provide an optimization model for optimally allocating investments to financial incentives and social preference building."

The annual plan is strongly affected by the available financial budget. The budget of IHOs is derived from donations, which are typically limited, uncertain, and to a large extent earmarked for specific countries or programs. These factors, together with the specific utility function of IHOs, render budgeting for IHOs a challenging managerial problem. In this paper, we develop an approach to optimize budget allocation plans for each country of operations. Academic/practical relevance: The current research provides a better understanding of the budgeting problem in IHOs given the increasing interest of the operations management community for nonprofit operations."

"fr" => "Motivated by the remanufacturing systems at Daimler AG and other automobile, aerospace and heavy machinery parts dealers/manufacturers, we develop a hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing system with controlled two-way substitution between new and remanufactured products. We develop Markov decision processes for management on product-level as well as on component-level. We show that the optimal policy on product-level has the switching-curve structure under the assumption that the lost sales costs for new and remanufactured products are identical. Based on this structural result, we develop an efficient, close-to-optimal heuristic for the general product-level model and for the component-level model. Our numerical experiments indicate that two-way substitution on component level significantly reduces total cost. We also extend our model to strategic cost that includes environmental aspects in the objective function. For this model, we find that substitution appears to be a phenomenon primarily beneficial for profit-oriented firms. Sustainability-oriented firms require significantly less frequent product substitution."

"fr" => "This paper investigates a supply chain governed by a flat penalty service-level contract in which missing the target fill rate can lead to costly operational disruption. We focus on near-miss bias: (1) the preference for near-miss events, that is, risky production quantities that reach the target but narrowly avoid disruption; and (2) riskier decision-making due to such preferences. We propose a reference-dependent behavioral model that explains the near-miss bias. The findings of a laboratory experiment show that production quantities are evaluated based on realized profits and are below the optimal model prediction. Contracts associated with lower perceived severity, that is, the ratio of flat penalty to wholesale price, result in lower production quantities than those with higher perceived severity, even though the standard model does not predict any effect. A structural estimation analysis indicates that the behavioral model performs better than the standard model in terms of predictive accuracy and goodness of fit. Our analysis provides insights for managers who design supply chain contracts in settings with considerable risk of disruption due to a shortage of critical parts."

"fr" => "This chapter provides an overview of collaboration in humanitarian operations, focusing on the logistical aspects. Humanitarian logistics and operations has emerged as a subfield of supply chain and operations management and studies how humanitarian organizations can be more efficient in the delivery of humanitarian aid. We review the key characteristics of this subfield compared to traditional logistics and supply chain management. Collaboration is particularly important in the humanitarian context, in which only the collective performance of humanitarian organizations should count. We therefore discuss key factors of collaboration using the humanitarian SCOR model. Finally, we analyze how far the COVID-19 pandemic has forced humanitarian organizations to collaborate differently in their operations and what can be learned from it for the future of humanitarian operations."

"fr" => "Many companies have started segmenting customers to better match their products and services to the needs of the customers. We support this development by presenting a stochastic model of a rental system with two customer classes that was motivated by the operations of one of Europe's leading logistics companies. At the company, customers can choose between premium and classic service. Under premium service, customers provide advance demand information (ADI) by reserving cars ahead of the time when they need them, and they receive a service guarantee in return. Under classic service, customers do not make a reservation and do not receive a service guarantee. Because both demand classes access a common pool of cars, the company must decide which demands to fill and which to reject. The admission decision must be made without knowing the rental duration, which is an exponentially distributed random variable. We model the system as a multiserver loss system and prove that the optimal admission policy is a threshold policy. Because computing the parameters of the policy is computationally intractable, we propose an ADI policy that can be implemented and executed with moderate effort. We analyze the performance of our ADI policy by analytically deriving upper and lower bounds on the optimal expected profit and by performing numerical experiments using data from the logistics company that motivated our research. The numerical experiments indicate that the potential benefit of using ADI is significant and that our ADI policy performs close to optimal. Finally, we extend our model to a different cost structure and to multiple ADI classes."

"fr" => "Service differentiation is an emerging method to improve profit and to better serve high-priority customers. Such an approach has recently been introduced by one of Europe's leading rail cargo companies. Under this approach, customers can choose between classic and premium services. Premium service is priced above classic service and premium customers receive a service guarantee which classic customers do not receive. The company has to decide under which conditions it should ration its fleet capacity to classic customers in order to increase service of premium customers. We model such a situation as a batch-arrival queuing loss system. We describe the model, solve it optimally, and derive quantities of interest such as service probabilities. We further analyze it by performing numerical experiments based on the data from the company that motivated our research. We show that the potential of capacity rationing can be substantial in situations like the one we analyzed. We also derive conditions under which rationing is especially beneficial, such as under high unit fleet holding costs or in the presence of batch arrivals compared to single arrivals."

Online food delivery (OFD) platforms have witnessed rapid global expansion, partly driven by shifts in consumer behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. These platforms enable customers to order food conveniently from a diverse array of restaurants through their mobile phones. A core functionality of these platforms is the algorithmic matching of drivers to food orders, which is the focus of our study as we aim to optimize this driver-order matching process.\n
We formulate real-time matching algorithms that take into account uncertain food processing times to strategically “delay” the assignment of drivers to orders. This intentional delay is designed to create a “thicker” marketplace, increasing the availability of both drivers and orders. Our algorithms use machine learning techniques to predict food processing times, and the dispatching of drivers is subsequently determined by balancing costs for idle driver waiting and for late deliveries. In scenarios with a single order in isolation, we show that the optimal policy adopts a threshold structure. Building on this insight, we propose a new k-level thickening policy with driving time limits for the general case of multiple orders. This policy postpones the assignment of drivers until a maximum of k suitable matching options are available. We evaluate our policy using a simplified model and identify several analytical properties, including the quasi-convexity of total costs in relation to market thickness, indicating the optimality of an intermediate level of market thickness. Numerical experiments with real data from Meituan show that our policy can yield a 54% reduction in total costs compared with existing policies. \n
Our study reveals that incorporating food processing times into the dispatch algorithm remarkably improves the efficacy of driver assignment. Our policy enables the platform to control two vital market parameters of real-time matching decisions: the number of drivers available to pick up and deliver an order promptly, and their proximity to the restaurant. Based on these two parameters, our algorithm matches drivers with orders in real time, offering significant managerial implications.
