This matters not just for economic growth but also for inequality: our research shows that as they grow apart in productivity, firms are also becoming more unequal in how much they pay workers. The authors’ work makes two additional contributions. First, they use new OECD data which is representative of the whole population of businesses in 16 countries. And second, they are able to link it to firms’ productivity. They find that technology, trade, and labor markets all play a role."

Productivity differences, for instance, explain a large share of the differences in income per capita across countries. This paper investigates the role of productivity heterogeneity across 18 countries over the period 2001-2012. In particular, it analyses the evidence that emerges from the distributed micro-data approach carried out in the OECD MultiProd project. The main outcome of the project is a unique dataset of harmonised crosscountry moments that are representative for the population of firms and comparable across countries even at a detailed industry level. We look at the 90-10 percentile ratio of LP and MFP and show that: i) productivity dispersion is high in both manufacturing and nonfinancial market services; ii) it has increased over time, especially in services; iii) a substantial part of this dispersion comes from differences among firms within the same sector of activity in each country; iv) this within sector dispersion remains the most important component of the overall dispersion for the entire period."

"fr" => "In this chapter we look at the role of export experience in influencing the firm’s sourcing decision regarding these key inputs. We show that greater experience is related to less domestic outsourcing. We do so by exploiting very detailed firm-level data from France, which include a long panel of balance sheet data, together with transaction-level import/export information. We decompose the overall effect into contributions of changes in prices, quality and variety. Estimating trade elasticities for narrow product categories of EU imports, we infer quality from data on imported values and volumes. For the EU as a whole, we find that trade agreements increased quality by 7% on average but did not affect prices or variety. This translates into a cumulative reduction in the consumer price index of 0.24% over our sample period. We also find a high degree of impact heterogeneity across EU countries, trading partners, and the type of trade agreement, with high-income EU countries seeing much stronger quality increases and larger overall consumer benefits."

It calculates country-level industry concentration measures from the novel data representative of the entire firm population in 12 European countries, and it develops a methodology for calculating industry concentration at the supranational level using detailed cross-country data on subsidiaries of business groups. This paper documents that industry concentration has increased not only in North America but also in Europe since 2000, albeit to a lesser extent."

First, we document an increase in wage and productivity dispersions, for both manufacturing and market services, and show that the increase is mainly driven by the bottom of the wage and productivity distributions. Second, we show that between-firm wage dispersion increased more in sectors that experienced an increase in productivity dispersion; the estimated elasticity is larger at the bottom than at the top of the wage/productivity distributions, consistent with a framework in which more productive firms charge higher mark-ups and/or larger wage mark-downs. Third, we find that both globalisation and digitalisation strengthen the link between productivity and wage dispersion. Our results suggest that policies designed to mitigate wage inequality must take into consideration gaps between firms of the same sectors, and how both globalisation and digitalisation affect these gaps."
